Ionia is located at 43°2′4″N 92°27′24″W / 43.03444, -92.45667 (43.034493, -92.456606).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.6 square miles (1.5 km²), all of it land.
As of the census of 2000, there were 277 people, 115 households, and 73 families residing in the city. The population density was 496.3 people per square mile (191.0/km²). There were 135 housing units at an average density of 241.9/sq mi (93.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 100.00% White. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.72% of the population.
There were 115 households out of which 31.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 57.4% were married couples living together, 3.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.5% were non-families. 32.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
