City DescriptionEssex is a city in Page County, Iowa, United States. The population was 884 at the 2000 census.
Essex is located at 40°49′59″N 95°18′19″W / 40.83306, -95.30528 (40.833016, -95.305208).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.5 square miles (3.9 km²), all of it land.
As of the census of 2000, there were 884 people, 356 households, and 260 families residing in the city. The population density was 586.7 people per square mile (226.0/km²). There were 393 housing units at an average density of 260.8/sq mi (100.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 97.85% White, 0.57% Native American, 0.34% from other races, and 1.24% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.68% of the population.
There were 356 households out of which 31.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.6% were married couples living together, 7.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 26.7% were non-families. 23.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 13.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.94.
