This steak is my idea of what a great steak house should be. First it must be affordable second serve beef in many variations or cuts third it must be a unique and memorable experience which places it above all other steak houses. This steak house meets all these criteria. 20 years ago my wife and I did a road vacation for three weeks. The trip took us from Maryland all the way out to Yellowstone National Park. Along the way we ate in every famous and special restaurant we had read about. Sort of like Charles Kuralt in his ON THE ROAD series. When we arrive in Des Moines I thought that if there was a great steak house on Planet Earth it had to be in Des Moines. And sure enough it was. When I saw the two prices for Cooking Yourself and the We Cook I thought gee wiz The actually allow you in the kitchen to cook your own. That was before we entered the restaurant. At that point we were only looking at the chalk board menu. What a place. First you go over to a bunch of glass door refrigerators and pick out your steak. Then it is cooked over a charcoal pit which is in the center of the restaurant. The smallest steak on the menu is a 14oz filet. How good it was! At that time 20 years ago the 14 oz filet was about $12. I guess it is higher now. It was done to perfection with excellent taste and juiciness. The price didnt require you to take out a second mortgage on your house. I havent been back since but the fact that it is still in business 20 years later tells me it is still super excellent.
