All proceeds ...Read More You are invited to participate and partner with us as we raise awareness about homelessness in central Iowa at our 2nd Annual walk-a-thon! All proceeds will benefit Hope Ministries programs and services to homeless men, women and children. Unlike any other walk-a-thon, we are offering an interactive experience! Along the 1.2 mile path, you will see cardboard testimonies from once-homeless individuals and families who are current shelter residents or recovery program graduates. We will also post statistics about homelessness along the path, and we'll have prizes for participants who complete our fill-in-the-blank stat sheet. NEW THIS YEAR: Help us "Loop the Lake!" With enough participants, we plan to surround Copper Creek Lake to form a "circle of hope" of compassionate men, women and children who will stand together in solidarity for people who are homeless in our community. Throughout the days you will see the Aztec Dancers, and the Danza de Caballitos. Saturday night is a tradition of dancing in the park. The 4th Annual Latino Talent Search will once again be featured. The Charros (the Mexican Cowboys) will show off their skills in roping and horsemanship.

This will be the second location change for the festival. The first annual event was held in 2002 at the Court Avenue/Walnut Street bridges. Planners took a year off in 2003 to reorganize & form a non-profit organization. In 2006, the festival relocated to the Blank Park Zoo. The newest Water Works location will allow the event, which Executive Director JoAnn Mackey said attracts 20,000-25,000 people each day, to expand more. |
