Ashton is located at 43°18′43″N, 95°47′30″W (43.311916, -95.791613).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.0 square miles (2.6 km²), of which, 1.0 square miles (2.6 km²) of it is land and 0.99% is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 461 people, 192 households, and 126 families residing in the city. The population density was 458.6 people per square mile (176.2/km²). There were 212 housing units at an average density of 210.9/sq mi (81.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.13% White, 0.22% Native American, 0.22% Asian, and 0.43% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.65% of the population.
There were 192 households out of which 33.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.3% were married couples living together, 3.6% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.9% were non-families. 32.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 18.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.36 and the average family size was 3.01.
