City DescriptionAlgona is a city in and the county seat of Kossuth County, Iowa, United States. The population was 5,741 at the 2000 census. Ambrose A. Call State Park is located two miles southwest of the city.
Algona was founded in 1854 by two brothers, Ambrose and Asa Call, who named the city after the native word for "Algonquin waters".
Between 1869 and 1975 the community was the location of Algona College, an institution sponsored by the Methodist Church.
In 1894, Algona, along with other Iowa communities such as Dysart and Wesley, became part of the project known as the "Orphan Trains". As New York City saw booming immigration, it also inevitably saw a rise in the number of orphans in its asylums. Unable to provide adequate care for them, it saw fit to ship nearly 100,000 westward to start a new life with families across America. Algona itself welcomed nearly 100 orphans into the town, many of whom remained lifelong residents.
From 1902 to 1903, Algona played host to the Algona Brownies, a Negro League barnstorming team. Despite winning the league title in 1903, the team disbanded that same year.
The Henry Adams Building, designed by Louis Sullivan in 1913 is located at the northwest corner ... Read MoreCity Contained By:Timezones:Size:

Questions Possibly Related to Algona, IowaProvided By Y! Answers
What is the distance in miles from Algona, Iowa to Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii? Question: I am going to Hawaii and my 16 month old son is going to Iowa with my mom. I've never been apart from him from so long and I'm kind of nervous. I was wondering just how far away we are really going to be. It looks like a million and two miles on the map.
Algona Iowa is zip code 50511, and Lihue is 96766 if that helps.
Answer:
The great circle distance from Algona Municipal airport (KAXA) to Lihue airport (LIH) is 3,961 miles. It seems far away but you can call your mother everyday to hear what he's doing and even talk to him. I can't imagine how tough it is to be apart from your son and hope the time goes by fast so you can be reunited with him soon.
Best wishes.

What am I allowed to send (letters, cards, photos?) to an inmate in a county jail in Algona, Iowa? Question: I'm not familiar with this situation. Do they read all in-coming mail word-for -word? Could I send a family photo? Does an inmate receive each letter or card in the envelop it arrived in???
What else do I need to keep in mind when corresponding with someone in a county jail (or maybe later prison?) If I talk about the inmate's mental illness, do they take that into account in how they treat the inmate? What are they allowed to do in jail? Check books out of a library? Watch any television? Use a computer? Attend any classes, or "prepping for work" projects?
Is someone hired to listen to inmate's private phone-calls all day and night? And someone hired to read and filter their mail??
Thanks for helping with so many questions!!
Answer:
I suggest you just call a local law office and ask them about this. If nothing else they can direct you to someone who may just know more than anyone on Answers would.
