City Description

Akron is a city in Plymouth County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,489 at the 2000 census. Akron is located at 42°49′31″N, 96°33′24″W (42.825289, -96.556582), along the Big Sioux River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.1 km²), all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,489 people, 667 households, and 424 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,232.4 people per square mile (475.1/km²). There were 707 housing units at an average density of 585.1/sq mi (225.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 99.13% White, 0.34% African American, 0.07% Native American, and 0.47% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.27% of the population. There were 667 households out of which 27.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 53.2% were married couples living together, 7.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.4% were non-families. 34.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 20.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.23 and the average family size was 2.85. In the city the
