City Description

Ashley is a town in Indiana located on the border of Smithfield Township, DeKalb County and Steuben Township, Steuben County. The population was 1,010 at the 2000 census. Ashley is located at 41°31′34″N 85°3′53″W / 41.52611, -85.06472 (41.526110, -85.064672). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2.1 km²), all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,010 people, 409 households, and 254 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,251.5 people per square mile (481.4/km²). There were 450 housing units at an average density of 557.6/sq mi (214.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.52% White, 0.40% African American, 0.10% Native American, 0.30% Asian, 0.20% Pacific Islander, 0.30% from other races, and 1.19% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.99% of the population. There were 409 households out of which 37.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.2% were married couples living together, 11.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 37.7% were non-families. 31.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.0% had someone living alone
