City DescriptionAlton is a city in Madison County, Illinois, United States, about 15 miles north of St. Louis, Missouri. The population was 34,511 at the 2006 census. Alton was ranked the 27th most livable small city in America by Money Magazine, edging out Edison, New Jersey by a slim margin.
The Alton area was home to Native Americans long before the founding of the modern city. While early historic accounts indicate occupation of this area by the Illiniwek or Illinois Confederacy, earlier native settlement is evidenced by the presence of the famous Piasa bird painted on a cliff face nearby, first seen by Europeans in 1673 by Father Pere Marquette.
Alton was developed as a river town in 1818 by Rufus Easton, who named the town after his son. He ran a passenger ferry service across the Mississippi River to the opposite Missouri shore. Alton is located amid the confluence of three important navigable rivers: the Illinois, the Mississippi, and the Missouri.Under construction is a monument, and multilevel observatory, located at the confluence of the Missouri and Mississippi near the levee in Wood River. Alton grew into a matter-of-fact river town with an industrial character and its steep-sloped ... Read MoreCity Contained By:City Contains:

Does anyone live in the Alton, Illinois area??? And if so, do you like it there...and why or why not.? Question: My husband is thinking of transfering there with his job and I'm not sold on the idea. I'd like to know if anyone on here lives in the area and if they like it or not and what the reason for liking or not liking it are. I have small children, so is it a place that is good to raise them?
Just to let you know....I don't want the offical website for the city. I don't want to read about parks or jobs..I want to know from people who have actually lived there, been there, or still live there on whether or not they like it and what their reasons are. Also....if you haven't ever done any of those then please don't answer. Thanks.
Answer:
All my in-laws live in the Alton area. Does your husband have any other transfer choices? Alton is a river town. It's an old city and you're real close to St. Louis but it's nothing special. It wouldn't be my choice.

I have filed for disability.
Answer:
Are you collecting any sort of unemployment or disability? If not, maybe you need to send a nice letter to your landlord describing your situation and how you may have trouble in the short term paying your rent but how you will be able to pay once disability and stuff kick in.
Anyway, as a renter, you have lots of rights. It takes a long time and a lot of legal hassling for the landlord to kick you out.

does anyone live in alton, illinois? Question: just asking, i might go there on vacation..
Answer:
I don't live there but I did visit it last Summer. It was fun for vacation but I went on one of the ghost tours and it wasn't very fun. The main ghost guy who did it wasn't very up on the history and he didn't weave a very good story. It seemed he was more interested in being the center of attention than making his customers happy.
The riverfront was a lot of fun though-- and they had a lot of great places to visit.

how's the place : Alton, illinois (near St. Louis)? Question: i am seeking the information about:
Environment- natural calamities
Criminal activities- rapes & killing
please provide any material information as i will be shifting there.
Answer:
In 1996-1997 I attended college in that general area (Jacksonville, IL, 45 mi north.) Many of my fellow students were from Alton.
Alton is a nice, quiet, sedate and picturesque river-town north of St. Louis. It is a bit podunk.
It suffers from the same midwest weather as elswhere. Summers can be hot and humid. Winters can be cold and snowy. It is a part of tornado alley. It is on the river so it can flood, but there are levees and such in place.

Haunted Alton Tour in Illinois? Question: Has anyone been on it, and was it scary or authentic?
Answer:
Hi I live in St. Louis and I have been on it a couple times. I found the tour very enjoyable and full of tons of information. The sites that you go see are very cool, and the stories that go with them even better! We did one on Halloween last year and just loved it! It can get a little intense but, scary um not so much. If you have never read the book Haunted Alton it is really great, most of the places in the book are where you will be going. It is very cool to see them in person. Our tour guide was so nice he was full of a ton of information; let us ask any questions we wanted. We also took a tape recorder and EMF detector and he had no problems with letting us use it on the tour. We did get some readings on the EMF but, no EVPS too bad. The tour really is what you make of it, they also do the Haunted Springfield IL tour and that is really good! There is a lot of Honest Abe Stuff but it really is a good tour! Well enjoy your tour you will have a lot of fun, wear your walking shoes!
