City DescriptionAmmon is a city in Bonneville County, Idaho, United States. As of the 2000 census the population of Ammon was 6,187 (2006 estimate: 12,065).
Having nearly doubled in size since 2000, Ammon is among the fastest-growing cities in Idaho. It is part of the Idaho Falls, Idaho Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Ammon is located at 43°28′35″N, 111°58′5″W (43.476268, -111.967964).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.9 square miles (7.6 km²), all of it land.
Ammon was founded by members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the mid 1880's. It was originally called South Iona. The area was made a ward the church in 1888 with William Rawson as bishop, which bishop renamed the town in honor of Ammon, a figure in the LDS book of scripture, theBook of Mormon. Ammon was an early agricultural center and later was home to several general stores, a grain elevator and a brickyard. The city was officially incorporated in 1905. It became a Second Class City under Idaho law in 1963. In the early 1900s a spur line was built by the Eastern Idaho Railroad to the Ammon Elevator.
