Blue Ridge--On October 11, while volunteers walked to raise money for the Alzheimer's Association, approximately 180 people in the U.S. developed the disease. Of the 80-plus walkers, national statistics indicate that approximately 10 will die from Alzheimer's Disease.

Although the fundraising for the second annual Georgia Mountain Alzheimer's Memory Walk continues until November 30, thousands of dollars were raised during the event. Awards were given to the Ed Judge family for Top Family Fundraising, Fannin County High School for Top School/Youth Group, St. Anthony's Forget-Me-Nots for Top Community Group, United Community Bank for Top Corporation, LifeCare for Top Senior Health Care and Di's Team for Philanthropic Commitment and Support.

The top fundraiser and top individual fundraiser was Elaine Owen. She and Gina Adams co-chaired the event, which took place at the United Community Bank Pavilion.

Although this is the walk's second year in Fannin County, it is the first year it was held in Blue Ridge, according to Freda Stephenson, director of development for the North Georgia region of the Georgia chapter of the Alzheimer's Association. She added that donations will contribute toward Georgia Mountain's efforts until November 30. Those interested in donating may visit www.georgiamemorywalk.org, call the office at 800-272-3900 or mail Alzheimer's Association, 855 Abutment Road, Suite 6, Dalton, GA 30721.

what are some good turkey hunting areas and techniques in blue ridge georgia area?
    Question:
i have hunted turkeys before but never in such a steep area. i would appreciate any help or suggestions.

    Answer:
Hey jaybavet, I haven't hunted turkeys out there in GA, I deer hunted a little south or Atlanta around Griffin and Jackson, but that terrain doesn't sound anything like where you're at. I have hunted some steep hardwood ridges here in OK though and it's a little different than hunting the flats in the bottoms. The main difference I see is that you don't always get to see them coming like you do hunting a field. We've had a couple fly right in on us. And we never heard anything out of them the whole time we were calling... just out of the blue they would drop in on us. The best results I've had is on tandom hunts with decoys. One guy running a couple of "feeding calls" just trying to sound like a small group of hens. And then every now and then I would try a little calling with my reed call or a goble box. The main thing though was to be completely set-up before we started calling, and have one guy ready all the time. We got caught un-prepared a couple of times just walking and calling and waiting for a hit, and next thing we knew they were trying to land in the tree's above us and we were no where close to being ready. Note: The absolute most important lesson I've learned hunting steep areas is to hunt uphill from the truck... I know a turkey insn't nearly as hard to get out of the woods as a big deer, but you know how they are about flopping... I've had them bounce and get 8'-10' off the ground and really take off and be dead. If they did that on a steep hill side it could put you alot further down the hill from your ride than you might want to be. We dropped a small 70 lbs button buck at the bottom of a steep highline cute one time and it almost killed me and a friend of mine trying to get it out. Goodluck!

i want to rent in blue ridge Georgia?
    Question:
i would like to find a place around blue ridge georgia or surounding areas

    Answer:
sky valley is a great place to get a timeshare at a chalet. your "question" if you will wasn't the most informative one, so I'm not quite sure what you're looking for. I live in North East Georgia, and we have a chalet in Sky Valley(right on the GA/NC border). Blairsville is also a great place to have a cabin or something like that

Is the best scenery had in the Georgia Blue Ridge mountains in Hiawassee, Blue Ridge, Clayton or Ellijay?

    Answer:
Ellijay is on the southwestern edge of the Georgia mountains, near the northern center of the state, in Gilmer County. From Atlanta, it's the most accessible of the destinations you mention. On the way up from Altanta to Ellijay, you can easily visit one of the tallest waterfalls in the eastern U.S. at Amicalola Falls. If your idea of "scenery" involves long views of mountain vistas from gently curving country roads, you'll like Gilmer County destinations more than places farther to the east, where the mountains are rougher, and the deeper valleys and more jagged rock formations made it hard to build roads, which often only get a few hours light at mid-day, still. Rabun County is thought of by many as the "heart" of the Georgia mountains, for its many famous formations like Talluhah Gorge, so Clayton often serves as a "base" for folks venturing out for day trips in the area. But it's actually the most Northeast county in GA, and has more the feel of the NC mountains than of GA, to my taste. The mountains and geography of Rabun County are quite rugged, and hiking is a challenge in many areas, but the rugged landscape and high rainfall make for many very spectacular waterfalls and secluded forest trails and mountain hollows. Brasstown Bald, the highest point in Georgia is in the next county west from Rabun County, near Hiawassee, in Towns County. Towns County has 1/2 the population of Rabun County (about 10,000 people in Towns County), so there are fewer places to stay and eat. But the mountains really push up in Towns County, and it is the heart of "moonshine" country in Georgia.

we are visiting blue ridge georgia the first part of aug.?
    Question:
i was wondering what the weather will be like than. should i bring summer clothes or fall clothes? also does it rain alot there that time of year?

    Answer:
Look for daytime temperatures from the middle 80's to middle 90's. Summertime pop-up showers and thunderstorms can often unpredictably pop up in the afternoon and early evening, especially if it is hot and humid that day. I would recommend you bring summer clothes. If you're going to be out on the lake at night, or up in the mountains around town, you may want to bring a light, long sleeve shirt.

    Question:
does anyone know anything about the blue ridge region in northern georgia?

    Answer:
The Blue Ridge Province occupies the northeastern portion of Georgia. It consists of an irregular sequence of mountains, ridges, and basins. Elevations reach 480 - 1,410 m (1,600 - 4,700 ft). The Blue Ridge Mountains and Cohutta Mountains form most of this province, with the McCaysville Basin separating them. Portions of the Piedmont Province extend into this province as well. Distinctly different elevations result in considerable variety in vegetation.

I'm traveling down South in April--any suggestions for where to go or what to see?
    Question:
I live in New England and am taking a road trip down south in April. I don't have an agenda...just plan on driving, sleeping in motels/hotels, and seeing what interests me. I'll try to get as far as I can get in a week and still make it back in time to start school back up. I did it a few years ago and got as far as Georgia, then had to head back up--stopped in NC, SC, Virginia and Georgia. Still, I'm open to other states. Any ideas for cool stuff to see or head to, in particular? Stopped at the Blue Ridge Mts. last time for hiking, went to Savannah and Charleston. Any little known treasures waiting to be seen? Well known works too! Thanks!

    Answer:
1)Kentucky: -Moon bow....a rainbow that happens at night over Cumberland Falls (located in Corbin Kentucky. It only happens once a month though, during a full moon). Also in Corbin is the original KFC. Not amazing or anything, but there is an "old-timey" museum there. -Mammoth Cave....largest cave system in the world. It is truly awesome. Not only the cave itself, but what is in the cave..It was a big ordeal during the civil war. (located in central Kentucky, North/East of Bowling Green). -Lincolns birth place......located in Hodgenville Kentucky. It shows the farm in which Abraham Lincoln grew up. I've never seen it, but I think it would be pretty cool. -Fort Knox....home to the country's gold. Though, they won't let you anywhere near the building (or let you take pictures 200 yards away even), so I guess I'm just using up space for this one. I'll tell you though that some places in Kentucky are "dry". Which means they don't have alcohol available (unless you go to a bootlegger, and I wouldn't suggest that).....funny though, Kentucky is home to Jim Beam and is the birth place of bourbon. You'd think you would be able to buy it. 2)Tennessee: -Gatlinburg....it is an old fashioned town, filled with everything! To much to explain, so I'll just give you a site (http://www.gatlinburg.com/) It is in the middle of the smokey mountains...a very beautiful place. A lot of things are also offered (i.e. sky diving, white water rafting...). It also has a lot of Ripley's Believe It Or Not (home to the largest hall of mirrors). And if you go there you must visit the Apple Barn! It's fantastic. -DollyWood....it is the theme park of the south. Has rides, shops, food, and music. It's pretty cool. -Memphis....obvious reasons. -Nashville......Grand Ole' Opry, and if you like the shop it has the largest mall in America. 3)Mississippi: -Beluxy....I've only been to Mississippie once, and the people I went with went there to gamble. It was pretty cool though, there are other things to do besides gamble (unless that is what you want to do). You are right on the river, so there is that..but, it is too cold to swim now. There are lots of stores, you watch sharks being fed, there are a lot of "beach" stuff really. Okay, I'm done for now....good luck!

    GA flower/plant id?
    Question:
I am having a hard time finding the name of this flower its white towards the top and purple towards the base. It has five points ends on the flower. It also had a seed pod on the plant its all spikey and green. Any help would be great even like a website with pictures from northern georgia near the town of blue ridge and ellijay

    Answer:
From the description of the seed pod, I am guessing that it may be a datura, also called Angel's Trumpet and Moonflower (because it blooms at night.) The wikipedia entry for datura has a photo, and there is also one at www.stonethegardener.com. From your description of the flower, I would guess that it was not fully open and will look similar to the photo in the Wikipedia article. The stonethegardener photo shows the flowers fully open, but none of the seed pods in the photo look as prickly as the ones I have seen.
