City Description

Austell is a city in Cobb and Douglas Counties in the U.S. state of Georgia. The population was 5,359 at the 2000 census. Census Estimates for 2005 show a population of 6,566. The city was named after the Austell family. Austell means "from the east." Austell is located at 33°48′57″N, 84°38′10″W (33.815905, -84.636242). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.7 square miles (14.8 km²), of which, 5.7 square miles (14.7 km²) of it is land and 0.18% is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 5,359 people, 2,009 households, and 1,386 families residing in the city. The population density was 942.1 people per square mile (363.6/km²). There were 2,144 housing units at an average density of 376.9/sq mi (145.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 65.42% White, 24.58% African American, 0.45% Native American, 0.90% Asian, 6.40% from other races, and 2.26% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.07% of the population. There were 2,009 households out of which 35.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.3% were married couples living together, 18.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 31.0% were
