Alto is located at 34°27′60″N, 83°34′26″W (34.466531, -83.573820).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.8 square miles (2.1 km²), all of it land.
As of the census of 2000, there were 876 people, 304 households, and 227 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,061.2 people per square mile (407.5/km²). There were 325 housing units at an average density of 393.7/sq mi (151.2/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 79.22% White, 3.08% African American, 0.34% Native American, 5.94% Asian, 9.02% from other races, and 2.40% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 20.09% of the population.
There were 304 households out of which 37.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.2% were married couples living together, 8.9% had a female householder with no husband present, and 25.3% were non-families. 21.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.6% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
