City DescriptionAtlantic Beach is a city in Duval County, Florida, United States. When the majority of communities in Duval County consolidated with Jacksonville, Florida in 1968, Atlantic Beach, along with Jacksonville Beach, Neptune Beach, and Baldwin, Florida, remained quasi-independent. Like the other towns, it maintains its own municipal government but its residents vote in the Jacksonville mayoral election and have representation on the Jacksonville city council. The population was 13,368 at the 2000 census. According to the U.S Census estimates of 2005, the city had a population of 13,436.
Atlantic Beach took off around 1900 after Henry Flagler built the Mayport stop of his East Coast Railway to the north of the town. The Atlantic Beach Corporation bought and developed most of the land in what is now Atlantic Beach in 1915, and the town was incorporated in 1926.
Atlantic Beach is part of the Jacksonville Beaches community.
The current mayor is John Meserve, who is also the manager of Fleet Landing, a veteran's retirement community in the town.

Does anyone know anything about West Palm Beach Atlantic University in Florida? Question: Does anyone know anything about West Palm Beach Atlantic University? I'm getting ready to make a big decision and I am wanting to know if this is a good school? If it's worth being 5 states away! HELP ME OUT!! I need some reviews and I know NOBODY in Florida!!
Answer:
Listed below are two web pages you might enjoy if you are really interested in going to Florida Atlantic University. This is a wonderful area to be, "five states away".
Like University of South Florida in Tampa, they are upgrading their Athletics program. Maybe there are more ambitious that their talent will allow.
As you will see, campuses are scattered up and down the lower east coast of Florida.
Please try to visit in person, if possible, and view several of the campuses personally.
Good luck and enjoy.

Are there a lot of hurricanes in West palm beach, Florida? Question: I was thinking of moving there, but i just read somewhere that there are a lot of hurricanes. Is that true? I'm getting nervous.
How bad are the hurricanes? I saw west palm beach on the map, and it's like a thin strip right on the atlantic ocean. looks dangerous, i don't know.
Answer:
It's a tough question to answer, because most places only keep track of where the center of a hurricane hit, not a map of all areas affected by hurricane conditions. For instance, this link (http://www.met.fsu.edu/explores/Tropical/atl2.html ) shows graphs of hurricane landfalls for different counties on the FL east coast. Palm Beach County saw 13 landfalling hurricanes between 1900-1996, or about 1 every 7 years on average. Four of those were major hurricanes (category 3 or greater), or about 1/3 of the hurricanes. But Hurricane Andrew (1992) likely caused some damage in West Palm Beach...but because the center made landfall in Miami-Dade County, it isn't included.
Just from my experience, SE Florida is hit by a hurricane every 2-4 years...occasionally with multiple hitting. You can probably count on a major hurricane once every 5-7 years. That doesn't mean West Palm Beach takes a direct hit that frequently (afterall, the last direct hit looks like it was in 1979), but it certainly is impacted to some degree.
The best you can do is be educated and prepared. Take all recommended precautions. Have a hurricane saftey kit in your home. Have a plan in mind in case you need to evacuate (what will you take? what is the evacuation plan/route for you particular area? when will you leave? where will you go?). It wouldn't hurt to have things like plywood/nails at your house, so you don't have to rush out and try to find those things should a hurricane threaten. Always keep up to date on the weather forecast during hurricane season. Talk to neighbors and locals to get their experiences and stories. Know whether your area is at threat for storm surge, or just winds. Above all else, don't take chances should a hurricane threaten.
In my opinion, I wouldn't move there unless I absolutely had to for a job...or I knew I had enough money to restart my life should a hurricane destroy my house.

What is the average cost of in-home childare for infants in Jacksonville, Fl? Question: I am moving to Jacksonville (Atlantic Beach area) Florida in a few months and am trying to find out what's the average cost of home childcare for infants under one year of age? Anybody know?
Answer:
I know this isn't the answer you are looking for but I would check the newspaper for the area...they should have classifieds online. Then maybe browse craigslist to see what the average prices are. And, one last suggestion is to post this question in the Florida group. You're more likely to find help there:). Good luck!

Why dont the beaches of Miami, Florida, have large waves even though they are open to the Atlantic Ocean?
Answer:
To get really good waves you need a sudden rise in sea floor elevation. Florida is sitting in the middle of a giant underwater shelf... there is no real substantial change in the elevations of shelves to "bump" the water up high enough that it curls under its own weight and creates good surfing waves.
The west coast (by comparison) gets good waves because there is very deep water right off the coast. When the vertical column of water that creates a wave, encounters the sudden seafloor rise, it has nowhere to go but up. This is only amplified by the fact that the prevailing winds across North America go west to east.
