    • Night of Terror -- Question of Human Rights

Making Human Rights A Reality by Patty Wilkins

"Night of Terror" on Nov. 15, 1917, when the warden at the Occoquan, Virginia's women's prison, ordered his guards to teach a lesson to the suffragists imprisoned there because they dared to picket Woodrow Wilson's White House for the right to vote.

You've heard of Women's Suffrage. It is a movement of Women who fought for the right or privilege of voting (suffrage) in the United States for 70 years.

It was not until 1920 that women were granted the right to go to the polls and vote; and this after an active 70 year battle to win this right. This is the story of our Grandmothers and Great-grandmothers; they lived only 90 years ago (some are still living).

In 1917, suffragists set up a daily picket line outside the White House-a first in American history. They continued even after the nation entered World War I and, as a result, were accused of being traitors.

Insisting that they were political prisoners, Lucy Burns demanded the warden respect their rights, only to be beaten and cuffed with her arms above her cell door. In solidarity and defiance, the other suffragettes assume Burns' painful posture.

By the end of the night, they were barely alive. Forty prison guards wielding clubs and their warden's blessing went on a rampage against the 33 women wrongly convicted.

What does that mean? It means all of us, no matter who we are, have the right to use the law. I am a person just like you! I am not to be treated any less before the law. Did you know you had that right?

This is the #6 human right of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. This document of 30 human rights was written by a committee of the United Nations, headed by Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt, wife of former United States President, Franklin D. Roosevelt (1933-1945). On December 10, 1948, the General Assembly of the United Nations adopted and proclaimed the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
