- The Carona-ization of Sheriff Sandra Hutchens has begun
Here we go again. Disgraced former Sheriff Mike Carona will soon receive his sentence, but his replacement, Sheriff Sandra Hutchens, is already being dragged down Carona Road by the same folks who supported Carona.
Take a look at the graphic above. She is offering a photo opportunity for the price of $1,600 - $3,200, at her upcoming fundraiser, on Jan. 22! Can't afford a picture? Well, you can attend this fundraiser for the paltry price of $250.
Now let's have a look at the folks who are on the Host Committee for this event: Click here to read the rest of this article.
- Janet Nguyen to be sworn in by Mexican-basher Mimi Walters
O.C. Supervisors Janet Nguyen and Bill Campbell will be sworn in on January 13, by Mexican bashing State Senator Mimi Walters (see the graphic below). Nice. What a slap to her constituents by Supervisor Nguyen.
Walters moved up to replace Dick Ackerman in the State Senate last year, after bashing Mexicans while running against Anaheim Councilman Harry Sidhu. To his shame, he too resorted to bashing Mexicans.
Couldn't Nguyen have picked someone like State Senator Lou Correa to swear her in?

- Tran vs. Correa in 2010 - and Nguyen vs. Sanchez too?
Never mind 2009, the big year in O.C. politics will be 2010. That is when I suspect that Assemblyman Van Tran will finally go up against a real candidate. He will be termed out - and the only available opportunity will be to take on popular State Senator Lou Correa. That will be quite a war, but Correa should beat him handily. Tran does not have the pull he used to.
One of the reasons Tran lost his groove is the advent of Supervisor Janet Nguyen, who has quickly become the New Van Tran. Nguyen will have a free shot at Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez. How will the Jannie turncoats in the DPOC deal with that?

- Did Supervisor Nguyen vote against restaurant ratings to cover for Little Saigon restaurants?
Local businesses in Little Saigon, "especially nail salons and restaurants, are taking a hit during this economic downtown," according to the O.C. Register.
Is this why O.C. Supervisor Janet Nguyen recently cast the decisive vote against restaurant ratings proposed by the County Health Department?
Nguyen did this even though she had a massive conflict of interest - her husband, Tom Bonikowski, and her Chief of Staff, Andrew Do, co-own a Lee's Sandwiches franchise in Stanton that has received major County health violations - and Nguyen kept this a secret from the public and the other Supervisors!

- Ethically Challenged Janet To Be Vice-Chair???
Matt Cunningham of Red County is reporting that Pat Bates will be elected Chair of the Orange County Board of Supervisors at the January 13th meeting replacing John Moorlach. So the next question is who will replace Bates as Vice-Chair? Cunningham opines that he believes that it will be Bill Campbell but there are rumors floating around that Janet Nguyen wants the position as well.
Janet's questionable ethics were most recently uncovered by our very own Art Pedroza when he reported on her blatant conflict of interest regarding the restaurant grading system vote by the Board of Supervisors. As you may remember Janet voted against the grading system and in doing so it benefitted her husband Tom Bonikowski, Chief of Staff Andrew Do, mentor Tony Lam and scores of campaign contributors that all own restaurants that have been cited for health code violations.

- Judge Goethals throws out hate crime charges in case involving beating of a Latino man
We reported earlier this month that Judge Thomas Goethals had reduced charges against three thugs who beat up a Latino in Garden Grove, for racial reasons to misdemeanors. Reducing the charges automatically threw out the hate crime charges. You can read our original post about this story at this link.
"Goethals sentenced 24-year-old Justin Louis Mullins of Garden Grove to four years and four months for violating probation on two prior felony domestic violence and drunken driving charges. In addition, Mullins was also sentenced to one year in county jail. James Joseph Kelly, 27, of California City got nine months in county jail and three years of formal probation while his co-defendant 26-year-old Cheyne Danica Wilson of Hesperia was sentenced to three months in county jail and three years of formal probation, according to the O.C. Register. Click here to read the rest of this article.
- Van Tran defended unsanitary food conditions long before Janet Nguyen ...
We recently broke the story that Nguyen voted against proposed restaurant grading systems without telling anyone that her husband and her chief of staff own a restaurant that has received major County health violations. It turns out that Assemblyman Van Tran was covering up for unsanitary food conditions at Vietnamese food establishments in Orange County long before Supervisor Janet Nguyen.
Tran wrote Assembly Bill 2214, which required "the California Department of Health Services to conduct a study to determine methods that allow certain Asian delicacies to meet existing food safety standards relating to retail sale at traditional Asian ceremonies and cultural events," according to a newsletter published by Tran.

- Who is Orange County's best Vietnamese American politician?
As we close out 2008, it is worth pointing out that Orange County's Vietnamese American politicians have become a dominant force. But who is the best of their lot? Who cares the most about their constituents? Who goes the extra mile? Who cares to do more than stuff their own pockets and cover up for their contributors?
Is it Assemblyman Van Tran? Or Supervisor Janet Nguyen? Or perhaps a Democrat in Garden Grove School Board Member Kim Oanh Nguyen-Lam? Or new Orange County Board of Education Trustee Long Pham?

- Why didn't Andrew Do mention his sandwich shop during his council campaign?
Why didn't Supervisor Janet Nguyen's Chief of Staff, Andrew Do, mention that he owns a Lee's Sandwiches shop when he ran for the Garden Grove City Council this year? If you look at his campaign website it mentions that he is a former prosecutor but there is zero mention about his sandwich shop in Stanton, even though he is the majority owner.
And when Nguyen voted against proposed restaurant ratings, why didn't Do ask her to refrain from voting, due to obvious conflict of interest? When exactly were they going to mention that Do and Nguyen's husband co-own a restaurant that has received major County health violations?

- Prevatt says Janet Nguyen didn't have a conflict of interest
The Liberal OC's Chris Prevatt finally weighed in on the ongoing Janet Nguyen restaurant rating scandal - but he did so at the Bolsavik blog instead of discussing this on his own blog.
Here is Prevatt's comment:
You have a conflict of interest with regard to a particular government decision if it is sufficiently likely that the outcome of the decision will have an important impact on your economic interests, and a significant portion of your jurisdiction does not also feel the important impact on their economic interests.

- Supervisor Nguyen collected over $12,000 this year from restaurants
Busted! It turns out that Supervisor Janet Nguyen had even more conflicts of interest when she voted against a pair of proposals to rate O.C. restaurants. I went to the O.C. Registrar of Voter's office today and pulled Nguyen's campaign finance records for her most recent Supervisorial race. Nguyen raked in over $12,000 from over 20 restaurants and food companies. Many of these businesses have been cited for health violations.
Some of Nguyen's restaurant/food company donors (and their violations) include:
* Azteca Restaurant. $2,000 donated on 4/1/08. One major County health violation and nine minor violations on 11/3/08.
* Wynndow Cafe. $200 donated on 4/1/08. Five minor County health violations on 8/19/08. Three major violations and nine minor violations on 7/22/08.
* Bleu Restaurant & Dancing. $1,500 donated on 4/17/08. One major and nine minor County health violations on 7/9/08. Ten minor and two major violations on 6/26/08.

Garden Grove is a city located in northern Orange County, California, United States. In 2004, the city's population was 170,000. State Route 22, also known as the Garden Grove Freeway, passes through the city running east-west. Garden Grove is home to a substantial Vietnamese-American population, forming the northern edge of Orange County's Little Saigon, and also to a large Korean-American population centered along Garden Grove Boulevard west of Brookhurst Street. The city is known outside the Southern California area for being the home of Robert H. Schuller's Crystal Cathedral, from which religious broadcasts are made.
The city has a distinct community within it, West Garden Grove, which is located in the westernmost portion of the city.
Garden Grove was founded by Alonzo Cook in 1874. A school district and Methodist church were organized that year. It remained a small rural crossroads until the arrival of the railroad in 1905. The rail connection helped the town prosper with crops of oranges, walnuts, chili peppers and -- later -- strawberries. In 1933, much of the town's central business district was destroyed by the Long Beach earthquake, and one person was killed. The
