Description
The Dominguez Rancho Adobe Museum will begin the New Year focusing on California's once rich economy with the first Speaker Series talk of 2012, beginning January 28. Steve Clugston will talk about the historic Californios, producers of the largest cowhide and tallow trading industry in the world.
Steve is an expert California historian who has written many articles ranging from the Early California Spanish Mission systems to the birth of the aviation and aerospace industry in California.
Steve will talk about Californios, the historical and regional term used to describe the Mestizo Spanish-speaking Catholic peoples born in California before 1848, not including Native American Indians. Steve will also talk about Spanish land grants, how Californios became landowners, and the birth of a rich ranching community.
Trade routes originated in California extending to Massachusetts, while reaching as far as the United Kingdom. Until the advent of the railroad, trading was done primarily by ships. No established overland trade routes existed until the 1840s when Cpt. Jedediah Smith led a small band of hunters and trappers into California.
If you are parent with a child studying California history or the Missions, this is an excellent opportunity for your family to learn more about our California history and our state.
Join us for our other speaker series dates with different topics: 5/12 and 9/15
