What has happened to the catfishing in Shasta Lake, northern California? Anyone have any luck lately? Question: Summer after summer I used to be able to catch several catfish on chicken liver, minnows, or even crickets in Shasta Lake. One of them topped 10 lbs about 5 years ago. Now over the past two years I've caught just one measly-sized one. My fishing finder shows lots of big fish in the Squaw Creek and Pit River arms at around 80 feet, but I can't get any of them to bite. Those have got to be catfish or trout, cuz they say all the carp died and there aren't that many sturgeon in the lake. Have the catfish died out too or found an abundant source of natural food?

Does any one know where monkey canyon is in california? Question: There is a big canyon with a small river in the middle
Answer:
It's outside of Tujunga in the Angeles National Forest. We used to call it Monkey Maze, the reason being that the only way to reach it was to climb down a very tall, scary ladder, or scrabble over rocks.

Rides at DISNEYLAND (California)? Question: I have a question about a few rides at Disneyland in California and California Adventure!
I want to go on three new rides (rides that I haven't been on, that is) this year. I am a HUUUGE scaredy-cat, and the drop in Pirates of the Carribean is about as scary as I can do as far as drops go.
Indiana Jones... any drops? Scary?
Grizzly River Run (in California Adventure)?
Splash Mountain... I know there is two drops, but is it worse than Pirates?
and Big Thunder Mountain Railroad?
Answer:
OOMMIGGODD im going there tomorrow! its gonna be AWESOME!!!!!!1 i absolutely adore those rides.
heres the scoop on those rides, which i know so well. ive been to disneyland multiple times a year (i live in northern ca)
indy: this ride is really, really fun. i wanna say its more like stuff jumps out at you, but thats not exactly it. its more like theres surprises around every turn. if you dont like jerky, this may not be the best. the car moves from side to side, up and down a lot. theres some drops, but more like short dips, and parts where you go up quickly. but when i was terrified and went on it the first time, i started with my eyes closed but was smiling all the way through.
grizzly: you usually get pretty wet. well, it depends on what side of the spinny raft your on. this has a couple drops, its like the same feeling as pirates of the caribbean, but maybe a bit longer and much, much wetter. at one point, you go into the big mountain cave thats part of the peak. In there, the boat goes over rapid type things that make it move side to side. thats fun.
splash mountain: great ride. ok, so obviously there is this huge, steep drop toward the end. its kinda like it takes your breath away when youre going down and makes a WHOOSH in your stomach. but its super smooth and quick, so if you wanna push your comfort zone a bit, do it! then when you're inside, there arent really any drops, but there is one part where you slide up and down. that parts kinda shaped like a squiggle. hard to explain
big thunder: this one is just really roller-coaster like. there are some drops and dips, but nothing too extreme. you go fast and make big turns and its just a tiny bit jolting, but super fun.
one last thing, i wanna recommend space mountain. if you arent into drops, then that would be great. its coaster-like as well, but in the dark. its very smooth and fast, a great roller coaster! i promise you wont get too scared, hold on tight.
okay, have a blast when you go. if your feeling nervous, i would definitely recommend indy jones and big thunder mountain. have an awesome, amazing, magical time!!!
god i love that place

How can you lose two whales? Question: How could the dumb-dumbs in California lose those two whales that were swimming in the Sacramento River? How could something that big, TWO somethings that big, just disappear?
Answer:
Well, if they made it out to the ocean, then it's understandable. The ocean is a big place and humpback whales swim pretty fast.
If they haven't made it out yet then I have no clue how they could've lost them - especially since they were trying so hard to "herd" them to the ocean.

Would this be a solution to the illegal immigration problem along the US-Mexico border? Question: The US gives the Mexican government an ultimatum: Either you do something about the unending flow of people from your country crossing the border illegally into our country, or we invade and take over the Baja California peninsula. There are only about 3-4 million people living there, and they can be deported across the Colorado River to the Mexican state of Sonora. The Baja California peninsula is a huge piece of land with hundreds of miles of beautiful coastline. We could encourage development there, and eventually turn it into the 51st US state. So, end result: either illegal immigration from Mexico ends (win), or we take over a big piece of new territory from Mexico (win) and use the military to deport the Mexicans from this new territory as well as the rest of the US (win).
Thoughts?
Answer:
Tempting... but, there's no way to make a graceful land grab.
However, there's nothing wrong with delivering an ultimatum to Mexico that states: end the flood of illegals, or suffer economic sanctions.
Just for the record, I rather like the idea of annexing Baja California by force, but one simply can't, can one?

Is my drink an original? Question: My husband recently brought home a bottle of vodka (a customer of his said in his thick Russian accent: "You fix my car, I give you good Russian Vodka!", lol, and indeed gave him the vodka when his car was fixed!). Not being big vodka drinkers, I came up with a drink that we really liked:
Club soda
Vodka
A couple spoonfuls of frozen lemonade concentrate
Fresh lime
Ice
I'm naming it "Russian Lemonade" since I made it with Russian vodka, and we also live on the Russian River in California! I've had a Lynchburg lemonade, but not one with vodka. What do you think?
Answer:
Not original, but good. There are many drinks which are the same, or similar. The name is original, and that's okay too! You can call it your own because of that.
www.webtender.com allows you to put in all the ingredients you have, and gives you combinations of drinks you can make with them, you can even submit your own.

Why do people think Colts fans are a bunch of rednecks? Question: I've been to the east coast the gulf coast and other parts of the world and everyone seems the same to me. If you cross the river and go into Kentucky they start talking a bit different, but its no different than going to a less populated area of California. Your just as likely to see someone wearing bib overalls in California as you are in Indiana, or Upstate New York! If you say we are a bunch of farmers then you would have to say the same about Green Bay Packers, Minnesota Vikings, and Chicago Bears fans! I know Chicago is a big city, but I live 3 hours from there and between there and Indy is nothing but Farmland and Purdue University! I consider gary Indiana part of Chicago. Other than it being in another state its really just a suburb of Chicago.
No I'm not insulting the Colts fans around the Chicago area. Just like I don't insult the Bears fans in the area where I live. Before the Colts where here you where either a Bears fan or a Bengals fan.

What Should California Do About The Increasing Water Shortage? Question: The Sacramento and San Joaquin Rivers meet at the Delta and a big canal sends much of the water there to Los Angeles, about 400 miles to the South..
The smelt, salmon and other fish are dying and may become extinct. The current suspect poison is city sewage with Ammonia, a by product of water purification.
The Peripheral Canal was proposed to by-pass the Delta, let the fish rot and send more water south. It was voted down a few years ago but, this plan is currently being promoted.
One alternative is Desalinization another is water recycling, already being used, after mixing it with aquifer water near Los Angeles with plans to increase its volume.
Bringing Columbia River water was considered but ruled out long ago.
Global Warming produces earlier snowmelt from the Sierra Nevada every year. This provides faster water flow in Summer months. There are old plans to enlarge Shasta and Vagueros Dams to double capacity but has not been done.
Any suggestions?
Answer:
Yes, find ways to discourage more people from moving here from other countries or states. California is already grossly over populated and we do not NEED more people here. We can do thing by strictly limiting the number of new construction building permits issued for residential developments.

I'm a born and raised southern california girl, moving to michigan. What should I expect? Question: I've only ever been to Arizona (camping at the colorado river, never got to meet the people), Nevada (just Vegas), and Hawaii (stayed at the Hilton resort). I've only ever seen snow the few times I went to Big Bear as a little kid to go build snowmen.
What kind of culture shock should I expect?
Will people treat me like some hollywood ditz or something?
=/
I'm planning on being in this little community for a long, long time.
What should I do to adjust?
It's a small town (Muskegon). My boyfriends aunt is from the town I'm moving to, and when she moved down here it was a complete culture shock for her. She says she'd never even seen a freeway until she came down here... and that's just hard to believe for me.
Answer:
I think you will like Michigan, especially Muskegon, which is on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan. Living on one of the Great Lakes is very much like living near the ocean, which you already do. Midwestern people are very welcoming. I know you will like it here!

Did You See This ? More illegal immigrants are pouring into Texas to give birth? Question: 'Border baby' boom strains S. Texas
More illegal immigrants are pouring into the state to give birth
By JAMES PINKERTON
Copyright 2006 Houston Chronicle
RIO GRANDE CITY — First it was a trickle, now it's a flood.
Rising numbers of undocumented immigrants from Mexico and Central America are streaming into Texas to give birth, straining hospitals and costing taxpayers hundreds of millions of dollars, health officials say.
Doctors and health officials say they are overwhelmed by both the new arrivals and those immigrant mothers who already are in the state. Even Houston's feeling the pinch. An estimated 70 percent to 80 percent of the 10,587 births at Ben Taub General Hospital and Lyndon B. Johnson General Hospital last year were to undocumented immigrants, administrators say.
Also feeling the strain is Starr County, an already poor South Texas county that has the region's only taxpayer-supported hospital district.
Immigrants "want a U.S.-born baby" and know that emergency room staffers don't collect any money up front, said Dr. Mario Rodriguez, an obstetrician in Starr County.
"The word is out: Come to Starr County and get delivered for free. Why pay $1,000 in Mexico when you can get it for free?" Rodriguez said.
''When we are separated only by the distance of the river, it's easy to do," Starr County hospital administrator Thalia Muñoz said. "It's gotten worse, and it's because the economy in Mexico is not good and because we provide all these benefits."
Unfortunately, doctors say, Starr County isn't alone.
''Our little snapshot is duplicated in all the municipalities between here and California," said Tony Falcon, a Rio Grande City physician who was appointed to the U.S.-Mexico Border Health Commission in April. ''What you see here is what is happening in Brownsville, McAllen, El Paso and San Diego."
He operates a private family clinic and delivers babies at the Starr County hospital. About a third of his deliveries are what he calls "walk-ins" — mothers in labor showing up at the ER.
''Obviously, it has a huge impact on patient health and the kind of health care that's provided," Falcon said. "You don't get the kind of prenatal care you should get."
'Anchor babies'
Immigration-control advocates regard the U.S.-born infants as "anchor babies" because they give their undocumented parents and relatives a way to petition for citizenship. They estimate that 360,000 of these babies are born in the U.S. every year and warn that the numbers are rising.
Once parents have an "anchor baby," they become more difficult to deport, said Jack Martin, a spokesman for the Federation for American Immigration Reform, a lobby organization in Washington, D.C.
''It's a fairly big factor in complicating the removal of illegal aliens," Martin said. "Illegal aliens know that and, to some extent, we think they're being influenced into having children as soon as they get into the U.S. to complicate their removal."
Some lawmakers want to begin denying citizenship to babies born to illegal immigrants.
Birthright citizenship, as it is known, has been in force since the approval of the Constitution's 14th Amendment in 1868. But several bills under consideration in Congress would abolish the longstanding federal policy. Sponsors include U.S. Reps. Ron Paul, R-Lake Jackson, and Nathan Deal, R-Ga.
In a largely symbolic move, the Michigan House of Representatives voted overwhelmingly on Sept. 8 to end birthright citizenship.
Undocumented immigrants say they are being attacked unfairly and think that all children born in the U.S. should have equal rights.
Socorro Gonzalez, an undocumented immigrant who in August gave birth to her fourth child on U.S. soil, said she and her husband aren't trying to take advantage of immigration laws or abuse the health care system.
''We're not here to have a child. We are here to work," she said as she cradled her infant son, Orlando Soto.
Gonzalez, 42, said she moved to South Texas four years ago to join her husband, a cabinet maker. Two of their older children were born at a private midwife's clinic, she said, and two were delivered at taxpayer expense at hospitals in McAllen.
Gonzalez said the benefits of undocumented immigrants' labor in the U.S. more than compensate for the costs of their medical bills.
''I don't see why they should deny a medical service if we're here struggling for this country," she said. ''Because of the help of Mexican workers, whether they want us or not, this country is progressing."
Still, someone has to pay the bills, and not everyone is happy about that.
Uncollected medical bills
Starr County Memorial Hospital had $3.6 million in uncollected medical bills in 2005, up from $1.5 million in 2002. The total when fiscal 2006 ends on Sept. 30 is expected to hit $3.9 million, chief financial officer Rafael Olivarez said. Unpaid bills for the past five years will reach nearly $13 million, he said.
To make up for the shortfall, Starr County's hospital district is proposing a 25 percent tax hike.
Already, the U.S. government is pitching in, setting aside $1 billion in Medicaid funds to pay for emergency care received by undocumented migrants over the next four years.
But Olivarez said getting the reimbursements isn't easy. Federal officials ''told us at a meeting they would pay us about 20 cents on the dollar," he said. "But it's better than nothing."
No one knows for sure how many undocumented immigrants there are or what they cost the health care system. Most hospitals don't ask whether patients have papers.
Total cost unknown
''It puts them in the position of being border police," said Amanda Engler, a spokeswoman for the Texas Hospital Association in Austin.
Harris County Hospital District officials say their policy is not to question patients directly about their citizenship.
''We do not explicitly ask if our patients are illegal, but we do ask them for proof of Harris County residency," district spokeswoman Shannon Rasp said. "Often citizenship status becomes clearer when billing issues come up."
Eighty-three percent of the undocumented immigrants receiving in-patient care at the district's hospitals and clinics last year were from Mexico, officials said. Six percent were from El Salvador or Guatemala. And the remaining 11 percent were from such countries as Britain, Canada, Haiti, India, Iran, Iraq, Nigeria and Vietnam.
''Using anecdotal information provided us by our staff, statistics from other public hospital systems and our patient demographics, we believe that approximately 70 to 80 percent of our obstetrics patients are undocumented," Rasp said.
In all, 57,072 patients visited the district's hospitals, clinics and health centers last year, and nearly a fifth were undocumented, Rasp said. The cost of their treatment was $97.3 million, up from $55 million in 2002.
angela R you don't know where I live I know all about Texas I don't need you to advise me on the state. Get Ur facts right before you make your comments instead of just assuming
Answer:
"Socorro Gonzalez, an undocumented immigrant who in August gave birth to her fourth child on U.S. soil, said she and her husband aren't trying to take advantage of immigration laws or abuse the health care system."
yeah, that's believable, how did she think she was going to work if she's always pregnant? and if they aren't trying to abuse the healthcare system, then why haven't they been making monthly payments on their bills?
"Already, the U.S. government is pitching in, setting aside $1 billion in Medicaid funds to pay for emergency care received by undocumented migrants over the next four years."
so this means that children all over the country are probably going to get shortchanged on their healthcare. how can they set aside a billion dollars for criminals when poor children all over the country suffer because the government is always trying to cut medicaid. not to mention it's a no brainer for encouraging more people to come over and commit fraud.

More Disneyland Ride Questions, I'm leaving tomorrow!!? Question: So as I said before (if you happened to read my other question), Pirates of the Caribbean is my limit on drops and scariness, I do like Star Tours and Pirates of the Caribbean very much. I am EXTREMELY afraid of heights!
I was wondering about the Matterhorn Bobsleds... because you are going in and out of the mountain... is it dizzying and are there big drops?
Also about Soaring over California... because I am afraid of heights... would that be bad for me?
I have asked about these before...
But what would I think of Indiana Jones (is the drop bigger than Pirates?), Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, and Grizzly River Run?
Sorry... asked it twice... don't answer this one.. haha. Hope they delete it
Answer:
Matterhorn is no big deal... there are no big drops, it's more of a twisty/turny ride, with a little bit of Yeti thrown in. Rather tame in comparison to other rides.
Soarin' DOES take you up in the air. But everyone agrees that you don't really notice it. You don't have any big drops, and it's SO worth it. You are taken into the air in complete darkness, so you don't really get the sense you are up in the air. Then when the show comes on in a couple seconds, it's so exhilerating, you forget your fears.
Indiana Jones doesn't have any drops. It's loud, and you have other scary elements, like possibly driving off the road, or getting crushed by a boulder.
Grizzley River Run in DCA is about the same as Pirates... but the water is deeper and the raft is round, so you get wet.
Splash Mountain: The drop is definitely bigger and steeper.
Big Thunder Mountain: You can handle this one... no big deal at all.
That's why they call them thrill rides, right?

Beginning of my book?
Answer:
The most important sentence in a novel is the first one. If you are going to begin with dialogue, it has to be a GREAT line.
BTW - "Her dad owned the top modeling agency in Morton Heights and gave birth to the top model." Oh yeah?
|
Do you like this beginning?
Answer:
Well I am warning you I am blunt, and brutally honest. So if you get your feelings hurt, I really want you to stop reading right now, because I don't think I could handle reading this either, I am not the nicest person. I will however give you constructive critisism.
One, grammar, spelling, word missuse, big problems, and it is irritating to notice those while reading, have a few people read over and edit, it's not a big deal, but you should work on it.
Second, you definately need a stronger begining, your opening sentence is boring, if I hadn't already commited to reading this, I wouldn't have read any farther.
Third, Don't worry so much about giving a long history of every single character as you introduce them the first time in class. In TV shows it works great but in books, introducing them as it is convenient to the story, is much more practical, and interesting.
Fourth, Being that your character is old enough to get into this kind of trouble, I would move up some of her childhood memories a little later in her childhood, because it seems rather unrealistic for her to still dwell on things from second and third grade.
Fifth, (I told you I am not nice) Possibly due to the long intro to all the characters, I began to skim as apposed to actually reading. I think if you worked on your introductions this could be a really awesome story. You would attract Dirty Little Liars fans for sure.
I hope my review wasn't to harsh.
Good Luck!♥
