It's a small town in the desert, with no features that impress me as being particularly interesting. If your tale can fit in such a place, Barstow is as good as any.

How cold does it get in Barstow, California in December?

I would like to know what the temperature range for December as I will be down there during that month.

Average high in December is 60.6 F and the average low is 31.1. It is easily the coldest month to be there. I was there for 3 weeks last July and it was unpleasant then too but because it was so unbelievably hot.

what is the driving distance from benton harbor, michigan to barstow, california?
Answer:
Just did the drive last summer and its about 2100 miles. You can do it in three days driving twelve hours a day or in one and a half with two drivers and few breaks. It took me and a 18 month old 36 hours to do the drive stopping every three hours. I slept at night only driving 12 hours a day. (she was a mean driver! j/k)

You can shoot air guns anywhere there. If you need more info call Pomona Airguns and talk to Steve, he's the owner and he's located in Hysperia. Check out his shop, he's one of the top air gun shops in the U.S.. He dosen't email, you have to call him. And if the phone is busy keep trying, he's taking phone orders from all over the country. He does a lot of business, no joke.

I lived for two years in Barstow.
I kind of liked it, but my wife hated it.
Visit Calico Ghost Town.
Everything else I would suggest requires a four wheel drive SUV. There is lots to see if you get off the main roads, but take a cell phone, plenty of water, and let someone know where you are going. Look at a BLM map.
Otherwise, do what most folks do; that is, go visit somewhere else. Arrowhead Lake, Victorville, Las Vegas, Death Valley, etc.

Recreational Shooting and Hunting
The California Desert Conservation Area offers a variety of recreational activities, including hiking, camping, off-highway vehicle use, hunting, and recreational shooting. A questions often asked is, "Where can I legally go target shooting or hunt in the desert?"
Shooting of any kind is not permitted in the Stoddard Valley OHV Recreation Area (except shotgun use during hunting season) and in the El Mirage OHV Recreation Area. These areas are heavily used by off-highway vehicles. What might be a great backstop for recreational shooters may be a rider's favorite hill climb or descent route.
A zone has been established where shotgun use only (with shot no larger than half the bore diameter) is allowed. The general area just south of State Route 58 and Interstate 40, north of the San Bernardino National Forest, west of the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps Air/Ground Combat Center and east of the Los Angeles County line is designated as shotgun-only by San Bernardino County Ordinance.
There is an irregular boundary south of the town of Barstow, Ca, where all types of legal weapon shooting is permitted. The "Shotgun Only" zone does not prohibit lawful skeet shooting.
RECREATIONAL SHOOTING ON THE PUBLIC LANDS
Target shooting is allowed on land managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). The legal target shooting area is the area north, northwest, or northeast of Barstow, taking into consideration any private land, posted signs, and other rules and regulations that would apply. It is the responsibility of the shooter to know the laws for the area where they are shooting.
Please see the overview map for the specific "shotguns only" area involved. This ordinance is in effect due to scattered homes and recreational users sharing the area.

Remember:
Find a safe backdrop. Shots fired across open desert can travel more than a mile.
Shoot only retrievable, freestanding targets. It is illegal to shoot at trees, bottles, or other objects. Take all used targets with you.
Do not shoot within 150 yards of any man-made object, camp, domestic livestock, or occupied dwelling.
Check with local sheriff or land management agencies before using an area for shooting. Do not shoot on Private Land without the owner's permission.

Play safe and use caution. Shooting has a great risk for injuring people at great distances.

in Arizona, when I lived there a few years ago, you could legally shoot under the following conditions
1 - outside city limits
2 - not in the direction of a 1/4 mile of an occupied dwelling
3 - Not at a Cactus (saguaro or otherwise)
4 - Adequate backstop

Has anyone stayed the night in Barstow, California? (Half way between Las Vegas & Los Angeles)?

We're just stopping for the night on our way to LA...where do you recommend us staying? Keep in mind we don't want to spend much money...only want to spend around $80 at the most. We found a really inexpensive place called Rodeway Inn that has supposedly been refurbished in 2006 (anyone stay there?) We are also looking at Best Western, Quality Inn, & Redroof Inn etc. Which should we most definitely stay away from??
We are not going to Vegas! We are leaving from Northern Utah and driving through Vegas to Los Angeles. We wanted to stay somewhere a couple hours away from LA so that it wouldn't take very long to get there the next morning. We know that there is nothing to "do" in Barstow, we are just going to sleep there.

there are loads of motels in Barstow. Most are nice and the rates are within reason. There are some pretty good places to eat too. All the ones you named are fine. If you wish you could drive about 30 or 40 miles further and stay in Victorville. It's very nice and also has many nice motels and places to eat.
