    City Description

Avalon, or Avalon Bay, is the only city on Santa Catalina Island. Besides Avalon, the only other center of population is the small unincorporated town of Two Harbors on the island. Its ZIP code is 90704 and it is in Los Angeles County, California, United States. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 3,127, with another 195 close outside of the city limits. The population is now estimated to be over 3,500. The default for wired phone numbers in the Avalon central office is (310) 510-XXXX, however, beginning on August 26, 2006, many of the phone numbers were transferred to the newly created 424 area code. The older parts of the town nearer the shoreline are dominated by small houses and two and three-story buildings in various traditional architectural styles. There are also several large apartment complexes nestled in the hills away from the shoreline, so that they are not obvious in most postcard photos of Avalon. Avalon is a rural waterfront town with the usual tourist-oriented businesses and services lining the coastline. Apart from the town itself, primary attractions include various trails into the hills surrounding the town, and the Wrigley Memorial and Botanical

    want to visit Avalon ,California?
    Question:
my friend and I would like to visit Avalon ; can we take a taxi from the airport? what would it cost? sorry I forgot to say what airport I was arriving at I meant LAX sorry about that!

    Answer:
Avalon is on Catalina Island. No, you cannot take a taxi. Here's a website on Catalina. http://www.catalinainfo.com/ By the way, you didn't say which airport. If that's your only destination, you should fly into John Wayne (code SNA) which is in Newport Beach. The Catalina Flyer (a boat) will take you from Newport in the morning and take you back in the evening. I think you can also go out one morning and come back a different evening if you want to stay in Catalina. Looks like round trip cost $57 per person. Avalon is fun, but super small. For the best Catalina activity, I recommend the kayaking. You can get tour guides to take you on a kayak tour of the island. It's awesome! The best is to do an overnight kayak/camping trip. It's actually pretty cheap considering you won't have to pay a hotel bill. And you can even find some where the tour guides cook you a gourmet meal! Just make sure you come in summer when it's warm! http://www.catalina.com/kayaks.html

Car Insurance for a 16 year old male in california?
    Question:
I am wondering what an estimate for car insurance for me would be. I live in a small North California town with almost no crime, and I will be driving something along the lines of a 1999 Toyota Avalon. I am also turning 17 in 3 months, and will be eligable for a good student discount. What can I expect my rates to be, and which Insurance company usually has the best rates for young teens?

    Answer:
The rates will be high but being a student will lower them, as will having driver's training. Insurance is very individual, so the same company that gives me cheap insurance ma give you expensive insurance. The best thing for you to do would be to get an online insurance quote at http://www.auto-insurance-knowledge.com/24-hour-insurance-quote-a uto.html This will compare all companies in your area and find you which one will offer you the lowest prices hope that helps

Are there any buffalo near Two Harbors on Catalina Island in California?
    Question:
My family is going on a trip to California and we are visiting Avalon City and Two Harbors. Does anyone know if any buffalo live within a reasonable distance from the Two Harbors area?

    Answer:
Yes, I have seen buffalo hiking on Catalina Island. Not sure how close they will be to the town, especially since they had the fire out there a few months ago. That may have affected where the animals travel. It is beautiful out there though, have a good time!

I have a 2005 Toyota Avalon XLE. I get 17-20 mpg. Dealer says it's my driving? Has anyone this problem?
    Question:
Dealer has checked the engine and transmission which both passed. I have complained since the first 500 miles. At first they said that it needed to break in. Later they stated the 23city/31 hiway was not a guarantee(not a basis for Lemon Law, IAW California). The trans does seem to slip and the engine races when I enter a parking lot that slopes down and away from the street. Toyota says this is normal just like the automatic down shifting I experience when going down hill. As soon as the local Carlsbad Toyota dealer learned that I was considering to file for the state Lemon Law they passed me to the regional office who discontinued further review when they realized MPG was not grounds for a Lemon Law complaint. Now, I drive my Avalon and love the comfort and try to forget the heavy gas use.

    Answer:
What are you complaining about??? My car only get's 10mpg.........................

Used car buying taxes and DMV fees California?
    Question:
Im buying a 2000 Totyat Avalon XLS for bout 8500 total...dealer is charging me 1400 for taxes and DMV fees does this sound right for a car under $10K I thought it was 10% of the total price approximately?HELP......

    Answer:
Go look at your contract. It is all itemized. Taxes should so state the amount you paid for that. License fees should so state the amount you paid for that. Taxes are based on county you live in which could be 7.75% of the sale price, and the DMV fees are about 2% of the sale price, and if the unit was more than 1 year expired, they will collect that from you as well.

If I move should I sell my car or keep it and drive it?
    Question:
I'm from Ohio and maybe within the next year or so I might move to (LA) California....I'm not sure at all yet. But if I do go I was wondering is it best if I sell my car for money and buy a car in California or should I drive it there? My car is a 98 Toyota Avalon and in good condition. Also, if you're buying a decent car in LA how much does a decent car usually cost? Or do they have a great transporation system that you don't really need one (subway, busses, etc)

    Answer:
yes you need a car in LA spend some good money having your car tuned up and new tires etc. then drive it until it dies. it the least expensive and most practical way. if you don't think it's able to make the trip sell it but realize without a car you'll be hurting for a ride to work.

I just saw tens of thousands of dolphins moving north in a massive pod. Do they migrate in such numbers?
    Question:
The afternoon hours of March 21, approx. 8 nautical miles from Catalina's Avalon Harbor, under sail enroute to Dana Point, our party was witness to a movement of Pacific bottlenose dolphins in what seemed like epic numbers! They were pretty tightly grouped, moving fast, and best guesstimates make the school at up to 3/4 mile wide and perhaps 1 1/2 to 2 miles in length! As coastal pleasure sailors with a fair number of hours logged offshore Southern California, we'd never seen groups anywhere near this size, and would like to know: 1) Given the estimated dimensions of the group, how many individuals could we've witnessed? 2) Do they assemble and move this way often? 3) Where'd they go and what're they doing? 4) Have you had similar encounters? Thanks for any insight or stories! IT WAS VERY VERY COOL!

    Answer:
Estimated dimensions would be difficult to determine. I would say a good guess is somewhere in the hundreds, possibly thousands. There is no scientific knowledge that could give you a better approximation. It is not unheard of for dolphins, and whales, to assemble as such. This type of social structure is called a superpod. I, would however, say this is a somewhat unique experience to see. When groups of dolphins get together like this, it is typically only for one thing - FOOD! As huge amounts of fish migrate up and down continental coastlines, predators such as dolphins oftentimes follow. I did mention that other cetaceans such as whales congregate like this. For example, beluga whales often congregate like this not for food, but to bear their young at the mouth of a river. I'm fairly certain the p. b. dolphins you saw were in it for the food. I, personally, have not had such encounters. I live in Florida and because of our sub-tropical climate we don't get huge movements of mammals.

is anyone going to any of the new Tokio Hotel dates?
    Question:

    Answer:

    Old letters to return?
    Question:
I have been given some old letters from WW2. They were found under some stuff in a car given up for sale at a car lot in California. Apparently they were not able to find the owner of the car to inform them so they were given to me. I would like to find the family of this husband and wife that wrote these letters as there is a photo and some other items of interest. I have tried to search for the husband through a military search site but they didnt go back that far and have not replied to my inquiries. The wifes address all come from California or Avalon, Catalina Island. The last name of the Husband is hyphenated Smith-Cox in some letters and there are military address'. Any ideas on how to find a family member of theirs? "UPDATE"*** My e-mail is open for contact. I have run internet searches of many types and for now i am exhausted which is why i am asking here. The car is unavailable and is no way traceable. I didnt give all the info about these people in hopes a family member may be able to identify from this post. I should post the husbands name for google searches, huh? **UPDATE 10.15.07 No luck so far but I have posted another item on genealogy so the name will come up in searches. Thank You all I am trying the suggestions but I will not be making an occupation of this. hahaha

    Answer:
Hopefully, there is SOME name in the contents, that can be searched in the social security death index, which covers deaths between about 1960ish to the present. I was raised in southern Calif, and the reality is that they probably did NOT remain on Catalina, but southern Calif is a real possibility. I believe (don't quote me) but there may be a means to trace the ownership of the car through DMV records. Car collectors may have more leads on this. As for the lack of response on the military end.. genealogists regularly can access historical files of relatives. Don't give up on that. http://www.cyndislist.com/worldwar2.htm Something here might give better info on that, than I can. Please keep us posted! if your email is not enabled, you may want to do that, since someone may come up with a better answer, but we cannot reach you once your question 'closes', unless email is open on your profile.

    need advice about car speakers?
    Question:
k so i messed up my original speakers from my car..it sounds horrible and make a crakling noise when i bump the radio..i tried changing the base and all that still nothing so i figured that i need new back speakers only..my question is what kind of speakers do i get for my car? i have a 02' toyota avalon xls..and also around how much will it cost me? ?i want to go somewhere local where they install car systems..but before i go i want to know how much is too much because i know guys charge girls more because we dont know nothing about that ! LOL..so i want all the advice i can get so they wont take me for a fool! By the way i live in california

    Answer:
Your car's speakers are 5 1/4" in the front doors and 5 1/4" in the rear. I wouldn't pay more than 150, installed for the rear. If you are mechanically inclined at all. I would suggest Installing the rear speakers yourself, to keep the cost down. They are usually a breeze.
