Questions Possibly Related to August, CaliforniaProvided By Y! Answers
Earthquake in California in August that was all over the news, where was it and its magnitude? Question: Hey you guys. I'm teaching about Tocqueville tomorrow and I remember the earthquake that occurred in California in August. I especially remember all of the hype CNN made about it, trying to make it much bigger and worse than it was.
This is an excellent modern-day example of what Tocqueville said in the chapter "Why American Writers and Orators Often Use an Inflated Style" of his book.
Thank you all very much. :)
Actually it might have been in July, I'm sorry about that.

Do I need to file taxes in California if I was a student out of state, and changed residency in August? Question: I went to college in Maryland for 4 years, but remained a California resident. While living in Maryland I earned nontaxed (scholarship) and taxed (but claimed exempt from state) income. I moved to Virginia and became a resident in August and earned only nontaxed (scholarship) income. Do I need to file as a resident or a non resident of California (or file at all)? Do I need to file as a part time resident of Virginia?
Answer:
While you were a CA resident, all income was taxable by CA regardless of where it was earned. Any income you earned in VA was also taxable there. You'd claim a credit on your CA return for the VA taxes paid.
In the years you were a CA resident you'll file a CA resident return and a VA non-resident return. In the year that you changed your domicile you'll file part-year returns in both states.
Keep in mind that if you return to CA when you complete your studies, CA may treat your change in domicile as a tax dodge and assess taxes on the income you earned in VA after you "changed" your domicile. CA is noted for doing this to students and military personnel.

Peru had an earthquake on August 16th,would that cause the northern fault lines in California to rupture? Question: I'm no scientist, but because Peru had an earthquake, would that put more pressure on the fault lines north, up the coast and eventually cause major earthquakes on the coast of California? Didn't California have a small earthquake just recently and wasn't there predictions of a major earthquake on the San Andreas Fault line made on CNN just a few days ago? Shouldn't people be made more aware of this possibility?
Answer:
Not really, the earthquake is a relieving of the pressure on an area of the fault, it shouldn't have a major effect on other areas.
Generally a part of the fault line which is subject to Earthquakes, but has not had one for years is most at risk. There are instances where a fault has been dormant for a long time {Indonesia recently} and it is subject to several fairly major shocks. However when the stress is relieved is not predictable, although sometimes pre-shocks are detected.
In summary; go move to the center of a tectonic plate.

Planning a family camping trip in August 2008. Does anyone know of any good campsites in California? Question: Looking for some good campsites for our family. Need to know what's good for children to have fun too??
Answer:
There's so many places to camp all over California! Yosemite Valley or Touloume Meadows. all along Hwy 49, Lassen National Recreation Area, anywhere 1 hour from Redding, Ca Lake Tahoe, Lake Shasta, Redwoods, National Park along Hwy 1, Death Valley in the Spring, Mono Lake are just a few of the areas I like to camp. My favorite is the Redding area though. I lived up there for 15 years and miss it very much! When I lived up there I could drive 1 hour in any direction and be in some of the most beautiful and desolate areas to camp, and I camp almost every weekend. Try Burney Falls State Park or drive up to Hat Creek. It really depends on what you and your family likes to do when you go camping. I love to just camp period, but if there's fishing then I'm in seventh heaven! I just love the outdoors and spend as much time in the wild I can under the stars or in a tent in inclimate weather.

What's the weather like in middle August in California - San Diego? What about the Grand Canyon? Question: thank you
Answer:
weather.com (http://www.weather.com) now has a feature called "Travel Smart". Click the tab, enter your city destination, and you can get info about weather in the area for any particular month. For San Diego, they write: Holiday Magazine voted San Diego the only area in the country with perfect weather. The average annual temperature is 70 degrees Fahrenheit, and a typical day is sunny and mild with low humidity. There is abundant sunshine much of the year, though June can be a bit gloomy. Summers are mild and spring is somewhat cooler.
For SoCal (Los Angeles area) August is HOT if you are in the inland valleys or up in the desert, and cooler as you get towards the beach. For instance, on a mid-August day, it might be 84 degrees in Manhattan Beach, 94 degrees out in Anaheim (Disneyland), and 102 degrees in Ontario (way out in the Inland Empire).
The Grand Canyon is also an "it depends" answer. The North Rim is higher than the South Rim, so even in mid-August it can be cool, because you can be up at 7,000+ ft and in the shadows under the trees in some hiking areas. At the South Rim, you'll probably find it fairly hot during the day, and cooler at night, but if you are planning a hike down into the canyon, temperatures will rise dramatically (a few hikers die doing that hike each year because they fail to bring enough water and they're not fit enough). Out west a lot depends on proximity to the ocean, or altitude. Closer to the ocean and higher altitudes =cooler temps.

Compton is usually considered the worst, but Inglewood is pretty bad, too. Watts hasn't improved much since the riots, El Monte and Pico Rivera are pretty much known as unsafe, crime ridden places to live and shop.
