Is it expensive to live in Arcata - Humboldt California? Question: I kind of want to go to Humboldt State. However, i want to know if the rent there would be expensive? Is it expensive to rent an apartment near the campus?
Answer:
Are you looking for a 1 or 2 bedroom apartment? I live with my boyfriend in a decent size 2 br/1 ba that is 1/2 a mile from HSU and rent is only $700. You can find lower priced 1 and 2 br places but some of these places aren't very good.
A good place to look would be Cricklewood Apartments - a 1 br is about $525 and a 2 br is $625 - they are some of the newest apartments in town and are really nice - free gym too!
Whatever you do, STAY AWAY FROM STROMBECK PROPERTY MANAGEMENT!!!!!

Wetsuit thickness for Northern California...? Question: So i will be moving up to Eureka/Arcata, California in two weeks and I have been wanting to purchase a wetsuit since according to my friends the water is really cold to surf up there....
So I was wondering if any one knew what type of wetsuit would be good...(in terms of thickness)
Ex. 4/2mm... 3/2mm
And what brand is well the "best"?
Ex. Rip Curl Billabong O'Neil etc..
Thanks in advance
Steven
Answer:
The link has some good infromation on "recommended" thicknesses. I don't wear any wet suit when the water hits 60, so they may be just a little too cautious in their suggestions.http://360guide.info/wetsuits/water-temperature-chart .html?Itemid=19
All of the name brands are good, but they are all sized just a little differently, so be sure to go to a surf shop to buy one (where you can try it on), and not on line. Like bathing suits, wetsuits are 'no return' items. Also, the folks in the local shops will know lots more about local water temps than those of us out here in cyberspace. The link gives you very accurate water temp info. Believe me, in 42 years of surfing, I get my Best Answers at local surf shops.

Why can't I find online apartment listings for Northern California? Question: I'm planning on transferring to Humboldt State University in December and I'm finding it very strange that I can't find any online apartment listings or even information for Arcata or even the surrounding area. I've definitely never had a problem finding plenty of online apartment listings for cities here in the valley. So, my questions are a) Does anyone know why this is so hard? and b) Can anyone give me a rough estimate of how much a studio or one bedroom apartment in Arcata, CA near the University would cost me monthly?
Answer:
Much depends on the location, maintenance and quality of the building. It looks like the range is from around $450 to $800 per month for a studio or one-bedroom apartment in Arcata, CA.
There are quite a few listings here:
http://humboldt.craigslist.org/search/apa?query=arcata&min Ask=min&maxAsk=max&bedrooms=
My advice would be to take a field trip to Arcata well before you make your choice. You really cannot tell very much about you possible new living conditions and neighbors, until you do.

Is it legal to smoke marijuana anywhere in the US? Question: I heard it was legal in the town of Arcata, California (it was on the Tonight Show with Jay leno)
Answer:
Eleven states[7] in the United States passed laws allowing cannabis possession and consumption for medical purposes; however, the Supreme Court of the United States in Gonzales v. Raich ruled that the listing of cannabis as a Schedule I controlled substance was constitutional, and that possession for any reason other than approved medical research was therefore illegal under federal law. This remained consistent with their ruling in United States v. Oakland Cannabis Buyers Cooperative, an 8-0 decision stating that there is no exception as a Schedule I drug for people to use cannabis for medical purposes.[8] This creates an interesting tension between state and federal laws.[9] According to The Guardian, Cannabis is now the United States's number one cash crop.
Some local city governments in the United States have noted that cannabis offenses are already an incredibly low priority for law enforcement, and have passed measures either decriminalizing small amounts of marijuana, or simply instructing local authorities to stop enforcing marijuana laws for small-time users. The city of Denver, Colorado, for instance, passed a law in 2006 which allows residents to legally possess up to an ounce of marijuana for personal use. Other notable locales include the city of West Hollywood, California, which has instructed local authorities to stop enforcing marijuana laws for those who use only small quantities in their own homes; and the state of Alaska, which allows residents to legally possess up to one ounce for personal use, recently reduced from four ounces.

How is Arcata, CA? Question: I'm going to be an exchange student in Arcata and I'm confused. Because there are people who are going to Salem, Portland (oregon), Pasadena (california) Ann Arbor (Michigan). Any suggestions to make me feel better?
Answer:
Arcata is a college and lumber mill town on the extreme northern coast of California, a long way from San Francisco or LA. Actually it is about halfway to Portland, OR from SF on the coast road. Located along the coast Arcata has a mild, and frequently foggy and wet climate. Never gets too cold, frost is really rare, and in summer it is rarely hot. In fact it can be outright chilly in a summer fog.
Humboldt State College, a division of the California State Unversity system, is located in Arcata, so the town has lots of college related activity. The nearby area is really beautiful with immense redwood trees, the ones remaining anyway, and a rugged coastline. Be warned that the water is cold on that coast, no swimming beaches! The closest city, very close, is Eureka, and it has most of the things smaller cities in the US have.
