Do they have Cyclo Sportivs in California?
    Question:
I have ridden lots of the European Alpine and Pyrenean climbs which figure in the Tour de france and including some Cyclo Sportivs like La Marmotte. I am considering a holiday in Calfornia. Do they do that sort of thing there?

    Answer:
Depends on what you're looking for. There are all kinds of centuries (100 mile or 100K rides) that happen throughout the year, but mostly in late spring through early fall. Some centuries are pretty hardcore with lots of climbing, but most are pretty laid back. The Wildflower Century in NorCal (http://www.chicovelo.org/wildflower.html) which happens in late April and the Sequoia Century the SF Bay Area (http://www.westernwheelers.org/main/sequoia/index.htm) which takes place in June are particularly scenic and hilly. Check out the bikecal.com website for a calendar of events for Northern California. There's also lots and lots of organized wine tour rides that range from 1 day cruises to 8 day full blown tours. You can check out bicycleadventures.com or bikeescapes.com for more info on something like that. Or you can check out goodrides.com if you're looking to map out something on your own. And if you're really adventurous there is always the annual AIDS ride that goes from SF to LA over a period of 7 days (http://www.aidslifecycle.org/index.html). That happens in early June as well. I've never done that ride myself, but I've known people that have and they tell me that it is no cruise ride -- they do some pretty serious miles. Hope this helps.

Anyone ACTUALLY get hired by Alpine Access?
    Question:
I've applied online with this company (work at home)...that the Today show recommended but they are not hiring in my state, which is California. Just curious what states they've hired from. Seems most of these online Telecommunication opportunities don't have any hiring room in California. Also, anyone have a LEGITIMATE company that a SAH mom of 2 could participate in, just to earn some extra cash? I don't have the cash to "buy into" starting a home based business but would like to find something similar to what Alpine Access does for consumers.

I am hosting a ski trip? Who bears liability?
    Question:
I am planning to host a ski trip on February 2nd, 2008 to Alpine Meadows Ski Resort in Tahoe, California. I anticipate approximately 40-50 people attending. Most of them will probably be teenagers. If one of them get injured on the bus ride somehow, would that be Quality Assurance Travel's liability or mine. (That is the bus company I am using). If they get injured somehow while skiing at Alpine Meadows, is that Alpine Meadows liability or mine? Basically, I was wondering if I need to purchase some sort of insurance?

    Answer:
insurance is always a good idea, but limit it to what you can actually be accounted for (which isn't much)....it's not like you're taking them in your bus, and it's not like they're staying at your lodge.....if you call any insurance agency, I'm sure they'll have a program tailor fit to charge you something (unnecessary), but for the most part you should be in the clear.....good luck, and have fun!

    Hairloss for 8 months already?
    Question:
I am 18 years old and I have been experiencing hairloss since 8 months ago (around June 2006). I have been doing research for the past eight months and I could not find an answer nor cause to my hairloss. My high school graduation date was closing in last June. However, I doubt that my hairloss is due to stress or abnormal diets because it should be reversible after 4-6 months at most. My hairloss has lasted for 8. The hairloss started two days after my camping trip in Alpine California. I suspect that this is the cause. I wore a thick beanie cap for three days straight without taking it off. The weather was hot in the day time and cold at night. I didn't sleep for most of the three days. Two days after returning from camp, I saw five to six strands fall off when I take a shower. Could this be the cause of a prolonged hairloss? The hairloss got worst after that day. My hair falls off in random location. Any idea of what's wrong with me?Thank you

    Answer:
cut up jalapeno peppers and rub them all over your scalp it will sting do this every day it should make your hair grow back i had a bald patch i tried it and worked.

Is it about time this came out? Some Jehovah's Witnesses want more than to leave Watchtowers ?
    Question:
Towns where Alleged Jehovah's Witness Child molesters have been reported to silentlambs Home Listed by each state If you would to add a new listing contact silentlambs at info@silentlambs.org The list below is designed to alert you to a possible danger in your community. Over the course of the last four years silentlambs has been a repository of reports on alleged Jehovah's Witness child molesters. Victims have reported extensively on times, dates and places abuse occurred. We have wrestled with how to alert the public as well as members that may be in congregations where abusers have been reported. We offer the following suggestions if you as a Jehovah's Witness are in a town/congregation where a report has been made. Do not allow your children to be alone with anyone in the congregation. Escort your children to the bathroom during meetings and make sure no else is with them when using facilities. Never allow your children to be alone in the car with anyone while in field service. Do not allow any member to study with your child alone. Avoid camping trips in which children go as a group with one or two adults. Avoid baby sitters that are adult males. At a get together watch your children and keep them in sight at all times. Ask elders directly if they know of any abusers in your congregation, use specific names and note their reaction. They will not tell you directly but indirectly you can often figure out who it is. If one elder is less cooperative talk to another till you find out enough information to know the facts. Check the local sex offender list in your area, type in the name of every person in your congregation to see if any are listed. Notice any male member of the congregation that does not have privileges such as microphone or other duties around the congregation, especially if for a long period of time. They can offer talks on the TMS or sermons Service Meeting but are not allowed to conduct meetings. (This is only in case of a confessed child molester) Note any member of the congregation that has children with sever rebellion or emotional problems. Do not allow your children to have sleepovers with anyone. Note members that the elders avoid having around their children. If you are a member of the public and your community is on the list take the following steps to protect your family. If Jehovah's Witnesses call at your home never allow them in your home If you do not wish Jehovah's Witnesses to call at your home purchase a no trespassing sign and place it near your door. JW's are instructing to only respect "no trespassing" signs any other variation will be ignored. If you do not wish Jehovah's Witnesses to call you can also call the local number and ask to be placed on the "do not call" list. They will note your home and check about once a year to make sure you wish to remain on the list. If you choose to study with Jehovah's Witnesses do so at a neutral location such as the local Kingdom Hall or in a public place. Never allow your child to be alone with members or their children. If you choose to attend meetings with Jehovah's Witnesses then we suggest you follow the guidelines above for members. Remember that most members are not aware of who the molesters are in their congregation according to church policy. They do not know. If two Jehovah's Witnesses call at your door one could be a child molester. According to church guidelines all confessed child molesters are required to have a partner when going door to door. If two Jehovah's Witnesses appear at your door you might wish to ask if one or both are child molesters for peace of mind. Of course keep in mind if the person is an accused child molester they are allowed to work alone in the door to door work. We hope this information is helpful and assists with the ultimate goal of silentlambs, protecting children. Check back as the list is updated on a regular basis. What do you think about article "Storm brings gusty winds and minor flooding"?
    Question:
Storm brings gusty winds and minor flooding Mother Nature waved goodbye to Santa Claus and took over from there, pounding the Bay Area on Tuesday with howling wind and rain, some minor flooding and a sobering reminder about who exactly is in charge this time of year. Whipping winds up to 35 miles per hour blew down trees and tossed debris around the San Francisco Bay Area as 2 to 3 inches of rain fell in the wettest coastal regions of Marin and Sonoma counties. Surging waves up to 20 feet high pounded the beaches. Thunder and lightning rocked Mendocino County and the northern Sacramento Valley while high winds in the Sierra closed ski resorts. Up to 3 feet of snow blanketed the Tahoe area, according to the National Weather Service. Although the rain was heavy and the wind was fierce at times, meteorologists said the storm was not unusual for this time of year. "It's what I would call a moderate storm, about a 6 on a scale of 10," said Jan Null, a consultant and adjunct professor of meteorology at San Francisco State University. "We have one or two of these each year. As far as a widespread big event, this is very vanilla." Most residents hunkered down with new gadgets, toys and confusing assembly directions and waited out the day-after-Christmas storm. It was a little more nerve-racking for those living near creeks and waterways. An urban- and small-stream flood advisory remained in effect throughout the night. Residents and merchants in Marin County kept a close watch on San Anselmo Creek. The flood-prone waterway poured over its banks during heavy rains last New Year's Eve, flooding about 500 homes and businesses. The flood cost San Anselmo merchants millions of dollars, putting some of them out of business and others on the brink of ruin. Sandbags were stacked in the flood-prone areas Tuesday. At least 30 merchants had floodgates up to redirect water away from their businesses. San Anselmo Councilwoman Barbara Thornton, who was mayor until earlier this month, said the town has spent the past year preparing for another flood. "We've worked hard throughout the year with businesses and residents to try to get them prepared," she said. "Last year you couldn't even say 'happy New Year' to anybody because of the situation." The National Weather Service issued a high surf advisory through Thursday, which could be good news for surfers, but most Bay Area surfboards remained at home Tuesday. "It's a little bit too stormy," said Ben Arnold, a 20-year-old surfer and employee at Northern Lights Surf Shop in Bodega Bay. "I doubt many people are surfing at all, but I bet up at Maverick's it will be pretty good in the next couple of days." Skiing wasn't particularly pleasurable in the Sierra, as gusting winds forced the closure of many ski runs. Alpine Meadows ski resort was closed Tuesday due to high winds. Aimi Xistra-Rich, the spokeswoman for Heavenly Mountain Resort in South Lake Tahoe, said she expected up to a foot of snow by this afternoon. "The high winds have forced us to go into wind holds on upper elevations," Xistra-Rich said. "By Thursday, Friday and Saturday it should be really good, so we're really looking forward to those days." The season's wettest storm was supposed to have been more intense, but it fizzled as it headed over the Pacific Ocean toward California. Warren Blier, the science officer for the National Weather Service, said the system began over the central Pacific and was heading straight east toward the Bay Area before it suddenly turned northeast. The storm hit Northern California and southern Oregon pretty hard, but Blier said the Bay Area was spared to an extent. Original forecasts had up to 6 inches of rain falling on the Bay Area, but by early Tuesday the rainfall prediction had been reduced by at least half. The weather service also canceled the flash flood warnings issued for Northern California. Blier said a mild El Niño is in effect this winter, a pattern that normally leads to wet weather in the Bay Area and Southern California and drier weather in the Pacific Northwest. "I think it is still an open question about whether the storm pattern will shift south or stay in the Pacific Northwest," Blier said. "So far it has been a very wet season in the Pacific Northwest." Null said so far it looks like a traditional Bay Area winter. "It's not unusual, but being the first windstorm of the year, a lot of weakened trees and loose material get blown around," he said. "When we tend to have significant problems around here is when we have multiple storms moving through the area. This is a one-day event." Gale warnings and high surf advisories were expected to remain in effect through today, but forecasters are predicting good tidings for the new year. Mark Strobin, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service, said the rain should taper off this morning, with a slight chance of thunderstorms, and completely dry out by the afternoon. "It should be mild and dry for the rest of the week with a lot of valley fog," he said. "It should be a dry New Year's Eve."

    Answer:

for those interested in global warming facts?
    Question:
What causes global warming? Carbon dioxide and other air pollution that is collecting in the atmosphere like a thickening blanket, trapping the sun's heat and causing the planet to warm up. Coal-burning power plants are the largest U.S. source of carbon dioxide pollution -- they produce 2.5 billion tons every year. Automobiles, the second largest source, create nearly 1.5 billion tons of CO2 annually. Here's the good news: technologies exist today to make cars that run cleaner and burn less gas, modernize power plants and generate electricity from nonpolluting sources, and cut our electricity use through energy efficiency. The challenge is to be sure these solutions are put to use. Is the earth really getting hotter? Yes. Although local temperatures fluctuate naturally, over the past 50 years the average global temperature has increased at the fastest rate in recorded history. And experts think the trend is accelerating: the 10 hottest years on record have all occurred since 1990. Scientists say that unless we curb global warming emissions, average U.S. temperatures could be 3 to 9 degrees higher by the end of the century. Are warmer temperatures causing bad things to happen? Global warming is already causing damage in many parts of the United States. In 2002, Colorado, Arizona and Oregon endured their worst wildfire seasons ever. The same year, drought created severe dust storms in Montana, Colorado and Kansas, and floods caused hundreds of millions of dollars in damage in Texas, Montana and North Dakota. Since the early 1950s, snow accumulation has declined 60 percent and winter seasons have shortened in some areas of the Cascade Range in Oregon and Washington. Of course, the impacts of global warming are not limited to the United States. In 2003, extreme heat waves caused more than 20,000 deaths in Europe and more than 1,500 deaths in India. And in what scientists regard as an alarming sign of events to come, the area of the Arctic's perennial polar ice cap is declining at the rate of 9 percent per decade. Is global warming making hurricanes worse? Global warming doesn't create hurricanes, but it does make them stronger and more dangerous. Because the ocean is getting warmer, tropical storms can pick up more energy and become more powerful. So global warming could turn, say, a category 3 storm into a much more dangerous category 4 storm. In fact, scientists have found that the destructive potential of hurricanes has greatly increased along with ocean temperature over the past 35 years. Is there really cause for serious concern? Yes. Global warming is a complex phenomenon, and its full-scale impacts are hard to predict far in advance. But each year scientists learn more about how global warming is affecting the planet, and many agree that certain consequences are likely to occur if current trends continue. Among these: Melting glaciers, early snowmelt and severe droughts will cause more dramatic water shortages in the American West. Rising sea levels will lead to coastal flooding on the Eastern seaboard, in Florida, and in other areas, such as the Gulf of Mexico. Warmer sea surface temperatures will fuel more intense hurricanes in the southeastern Atlantic and Gulf coasts. Forests, farms and cities will face troublesome new pests and more mosquito-borne diseases. Disruption of habitats such as coral reefs and alpine meadows could drive many plant and animal species to extinction. Could global warming trigger a sudden catastrophe? Recently, researchers -- and even the U.S. Defense Department -- have investigated the possibility of abrupt climate change, in which gradual global warming triggers a sudden shift in the earth's climate, causing parts of the world to dramatically heat up or cool down in the span of a few years. In February 2004, consultants to the Pentagon released a report laying out the possible impacts of abrupt climate change on national security. In a worst-case scenario, the study concluded, global warming could make large areas of the world uninhabitable and cause massive food and water shortages, sparking widespread migrations and war. While this prospect remains highly speculative, many of global warming's effects are already being observed -- and felt. And the idea that such extreme change is possible underscores the urgent need to start cutting global warming pollution. What country is the largest source of global warming pollution? The United States. Though Americans make up just 4 percent of the world's population, we produce 25 percent of the carbon dioxide pollution from fossil-fuel burning -- by far the largest share of any country. In fact, the United States emits more carbon dioxide than China, India and Japan, combined. Clearly America ought to take a leadership role in solving the problem. And as the world's top developer of new technologies, we are well positioned to do so -- we already have the know-how. How can we cut global warming pollution? It's simple: By reducing pollution from vehicles and power plants. Right away, we should put existing technologies for building cleaner cars and more modern electricity generators into widespread use. We can increase our reliance on renewable energy sources such as wind, sun and geothermal. And we can manufacture more efficient appliances and conserve energy. Why aren't these technologies more commonplace now? Because, while the technologies exist, the corporate and political will to put them into widespread use does not. Many companies in the automobile and energy industries put pressure on the White House and Congress to halt or delay new laws or regulations -- or even to stop enforcing existing rules -- that would drive such changes. From requiring catalytic converters to improving gas mileage, car companies have fought even the smallest measure to protect public health and the environment. If progress is to be made, the American people will have to demand it. Do we need new laws requiring industry to cut emissions of global warming pollution? Yes. The Bush administration is promoting an initiative in which energy companies cut emissions only if they choose to do so. As the past 10 years have clearly shown, though, voluntary programs do not stop the growth of emissions. Proposals to cap emissions of carbon dioxide and other heat-trapping pollutants from America's largest sources -- power plants, industrial facilities, and transportation fuels -- are gaining support in Congress. Stricter efficiency requirements for electric appliances will also help reduce pollution. One example is the 30 percent tighter standard now in place for home central air conditioners and heat pumps, a Clinton-era achievement that will prevent the emission of 51 million metric tons of carbon -- the equivalent of taking 34 million cars off the road for one year. The new rule survived a Bush administration effort to weaken it when, in January 2004, a federal court sided with an NRDC-led coalition and reversed the administration's rollback. Is it possible to cut power plant pollution and still have enough electricity? Yes. First, we must use more efficient appliances and equipment in our homes and offices to reduce our electricity needs. We can also phase out the decades-old, coal-burning power plants that generate most of our electricity and replace them with cleaner plants. And we can increase our use of renewable energy sources such as wind and sun. Some states are moving in this direction: California has required its largest utilities to get 20 percent of their electricity from renewable sources by 2017, and New York has pledged to compel power companies to provide 25 percent of the state's electricity from renewable sources by 2013. How can we cut car pollution? Cost-effective technologies to reduce global warming pollution from cars and light trucks of all sizes are available now. There is no reason to wait and hope that hydrogen fuel cell vehicles will solve the problem in the future. Hybrid gas-electric engines can cut global warming pollution by one-third or more today; hybrid sedans, SUVs and trucks from several automakers are already on the market. But automakers should be doing a lot more: They've used a legal loophole to make SUVs far less fuel efficient than they could be; the popularity of these vehicles has generated a 20 percent increase in transportation-related carbon dioxide pollution since the early 1990s. Closing this loophole and requiring SUVs, minivans and pick-up trucks to be as efficient as cars would cut 120 million tons of carbon dioxide pollution a year by 2010. If automakers used the technology they have right now to raise fuel economy standards for new cars and light trucks to a combined 40 m.p.g., carbon dioxide pollution would eventually drop by more than 650 million tons per year as these vehicles replaced older models. For more information on hybrid vehicles, see NRDC's hybrid guide. What can I do to help fight global warming? There are many simple steps you can take right now to cut global warming pollution. Make conserving energy a part of your daily routine. Each time you choose a compact fluorescent light bulb over an incandescent bulb, for example, you'll lower your energy bill and keep nearly 700 pounds of carbon dioxide out of the air over the bulb's lifetime. By opting for a refrigerator with the Energy Star label -- indicating it uses at least 15 percent less energy than the federal requirement -- over a less energy-efficient model, you can reduce carbon dioxide pollution by nearly a ton in total.

    Answer:
wow. Not a question, but still, wow. and scary. Those who say that this is just a natural trend are not in possesion of all the facts, I think. Geological/Weather trends such as this usually take millennia, not less than 100 years. its too much too fast to be natural. One thing I've never understood is the laws that make companies cut emissions if they want to. What's the point? If its going to cost them money, no company is going to do it unless forced. That's been proven time and time again. Its a waste of paper to have a voluntary law like that, and you would think the politicians would know that. Basic human nature ( unfortunately) ps. Costs for the fence?
    Question:
When you see cost estimates for the fence I hope you're realizing that's for sections of it.here's estimates for 2 sections.Note cost per foot. Homeland Security estimates for the entire fence are up to and beyond 100 billion dollars. That's just for the fence mind you.Now...what do we do about the 44% who are here illegally who didn't cross the Northern Border? Is the fence worth it to cut back on other things like Border Patrol and port security?Because that's what will happen. -- HOW MUCH THE FENCE COULD COST The Border Patrol made 1.17 million arrests of people trying to cross illegally in 2005. The largest number of arrests was in the Tucson sector. 15 feet .... $2.2 BILLION Fence sponsor Rep. Duncan Hunter, R-Alpine (San Diego County), used estimates from private contractors to reach this figure. $3.7 BILLION: A similar fence under construction in California so far costs $74 million for 14 miles. MAYBE MORE: Additional costs include potential litigation and the purchase of land now held privately. -- BUILDING A ROAD Unpaved but smooth access road 150 feet wide Clearing and grubbing $90,000 per mile Erosion control $25,000 per mile Grading $633,600 per mile Road gravel $190,080 per mile ----------------------------------------------------------- --------------------- E-

    Answer:
You make a good point, a fence would cost a fortune. Heck a better question would be "How long would it cost to build a fence?" ages....We need to secure our borders but a massive fence isn't going to do much if you ask me.13ft fence= 14ft ladders. I have always suggested and will continue to suggest that we hire a lot more border guards (probably like three times of what we have now). We'd create new jobs and we'd get our southern border safer , faster.

Which ski boots should I buy? Salomon Mission 7 or Foil?
    Question:
I'm looking at buying either the Salomon Mission 7 or Foil ski boots. Here's links to both: Foil: http://www.evogear.com/outlet/alpine-ski-boots/sa lomon-foil-2007.aspx Mission 7: http://www.rei.com/product/759013 Here's what I'm using: Bindings: (mine are B85 though so the brakes fit my 85mm skis) http://www.americaskiing.com/index.php?target=products&pro duct_id=3071 Skis: (171cm) http://www.armadaskis.com/product/skis/el_rey.php I'm a fairly new skier (have been skiing twice, can ride intermediate runs) and am looking for something that'll keep me comfortable but not hold me back when I improve (I really am serious about skiing.) I am a 6' 3" 200lbs. athletic male and plan on riding mostly groomers and a little park in the southern California area. The Missions are cheaper but the Foils have better reviews and match the colors of my skis. But I'm afraid the Foils are beyond my skill level. Which boot should I buy? Or should I rent for a season and improve my skills first?

    Answer:
Like the other posters have said, you need to make sure the boot fits. My suggestion is to go to a good bootfitter in your area (I would make that your next Yahoo question "Recommend a good bootfitter near..."). Go in to the bootfitter open minded. It's ok to have a price point in mind, but expect to spend at least $500 for something decent, including the footbeds. Footbeds are a custom insole, heated and cooled to the shape of your foot. They reduce the pain that pressure points can cause and can help with adjusting your cant. They make the boot way more comfortable. What is cant? It is the angle your foot/ankle has over your ski. Most humans do not have equal feet. My right leg and foot are smaller than my left one and my cant is so severe that I form what is called an "A-frame" on skis...When I try to turn to the right, my outside ski (my left ski) gets on edge, but my inside ski (my right ski) can only flatten, not get on edge. This does not make for efficient skiing. (i.e. I can't carve a turn to the right). Having my boots properly canted fixed this problem, making my turns much easier to make, resulting in my using way less energy to turn. The bootfitter will ask you about your skiing preferences and recommend the best fitting boot based on boot stiffness, foot volume (how much room needed inside the boot for your foot) and price. Expect to spend ~2 hours with the bootfitter. Bring your ski socks with you...you want to be fitted using the same socks you'll be wearing. BTW, being a fairly new skier, I want to make sure you put nothing in your boot but your sock and your foot. Your long underwear does not belong tucked into the boot...roll it up at the boot cuff. Haing anything else in your boot can cause friction points we call hotspots...sores that make it difficult to ski on consecutive days. You will most likely need to go back a few times to do some adjustments here and there. One lesson I learned, if you gain/lose weight or have surgery on either leg/foot, you will need the boots to be readjusted. The cant will change. If you are as serious as you say you are, you will forget about the color or if they match your skis. Your boots are the most important piece of ski equipment you will ever buy. You can rent/borrow skis, but boots need to be personal to get the most out of your skis. You will always be improving your skills...unless you plan of racing, buying aboot with a medium stiffness should suffice for a number of years. PS The most important thing about bindings is will they release when you need them to (and not when you don't want them to) and how old are they? The technology is pretty even across the board.

how much did you pay for your bike and accessories?
    Question:
This is just out of curiosity.. so I just bought a 2008 gsxr 750. I live in California so things are a bit expensive here. First the dealership wanted about 15k for the bike but I said F*** no!! so after a long time, they got me into getting it for about 11k. I also got a bunch of accessories. I got a dainese armor for about 300 bucks, alpine star gloves, a shoei rf-1000 helmet, a leather jacket, some stuff for my bike. Also, I extended my warranty to 6 years instead of 1 year mfg warranty and I got that gap coverage (incase I total the bike, I don’t have to pay for the rest of the loan) so all that s*** ended up to be like 17k. I know that’s a lot of money and I know a lot of you guys are going to say I got ripped off but I just want to know how much you got your stuff for and what state you guys are from (just to see the price differ) thanks!

    Answer:
I just bought a used bike this summer. I feel like I got a pretty good deal. I got a 1994 Suzuki Intruder 800 with only 2000 miles for $2300. For the mileage and the condition I think I got a steal. I've seen some people selling the same bike same year with about 8000 more miles for more than a thousand more than I got mine for.
