City DescriptionAlbany is a city in Alameda County, California, United States. The population was 16,447 at the 2000 census.
In 1908, a group of local women protested the dumping of Berkeley garbage in their community. Armed with two shotguns and a twenty-two-caliber rifle, they confronted the drivers of the wagons near what is now the corner of San Pablo Avenue and Buchanan Street. The ladies told the drivers of the horse-drawn garbage wagons to go home, which they did quickly and without complaint. Shortly thereafter, the residents of the town voted to incorporate as the City of Ocean View. In 1909, voters changed the name of the city, primarily to distinguish the city from the adjacent section of Berkeley which had previously been named Ocean View. On a vote of 38 to 6 the city was renamed in honor of Albany, New York, the birthplace of the city's first mayor, Frank Roberts.
In 2008 Albany will celebrate its centennial. A contest is underway now to update the town motto which appears on the City Seal. The current motto is "Northern Gateway to Alameda County".
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 5.5 square miles (14.2 km²), of which, 1.7 square miles ... Read MoreCity Contained By:- Alameda County

Question about moving to California ? Question: Currently I live in Albany, NY. I visited California two years ago and loved it. I now have nothing that holds me in NY and would like to move. Is there certain areas of California that are more gay/lesbian friendly than others? Is California all hype or is it a good place to live?
Answer:
San Francisco and Berkeley are the most liberal and homosexual friendly cities in the country, but if you can't afford to live there, then any other city in the Bay Area would be a good fit for you. The Bay Area is a beautiful and fun place to live with lively and friendly people. The weather is unbeatable which is a definite plus. I grew up in the Bay Area, while it's a little too liberal for me, most people love it.

Whats there in New York, Albany? Question: I'm from Southern California moving to New York, Albany-- not really the main Albany Albany just some place not so near it, whats there to do and is it a bad place or just a dull place or just a simple quiet place like any other place in the state, any specific info about the place?
Thanks! I'm a little unsure about Albany
Answer:
There are a couple of things there. There's the Empire State Plaza in downtown Albany. There are a couple of colleges in the area like SUNY Albany. You can always go and watch any of their sporting events. There are some malls and lots of places to eat. It can get boring at times. I lived there for 4 years.

Should I move to Albany, Bend, Eugene, or Salem? Question: I'm considering getting the heck out of Southern California and I really want to work in Oregon. But I don't want the big city life of Portland. What can you tell me about those 4 cities?
You can tell I'm VERY intelligent, I even put the cities in alphabetical order. LOL.
I'm in the Computer Technology field if that makes a difference. Thanks for reading.
Answer:
Bend is beautiful, but you have to like the desert and that kinda thing, Eugene is a nice town, it is a college town, its nice tho, albany has a paper mill so it smells foul, I would say Salem, you would be about 45 minutes from Portland if you need to go there for anything, and its a nice area, there are smaller towns outside of Salem too that are beautiful. Good luck in your move!

Transfer to California? Question: i am a sophomore currenty studying in state university of new york in albany and want to transfer to california state univeristy(now looking at fullerton). plus im an internationa student and want to major in german,,,but now i know that my university do not have a german major and i am sick of this weather as well etc. with all that i decided to try to transfer. is it gonna be "extremely harder" for out of the state students to transfer to college in california? i really want to get out of albany so bad.
one more thing, i am just curious about my GPA. High school and current GPA are both around 2,7. Isn't it too low to feel safe?
Answer:
Aw and I came here from there!
Fullterton is not all that bad. I came from LA. Albany is a walk in the park compared to LA.
Learn to like rain and fires and EARTHQUAKES. If you've never felt an Earthquake it will invoke the Fear of God in you.
California more expensive. The gas is a good 50 cent to $1 more.
Oranges are cheaper by far.
You will have to pay NON RESIDENT rates for school there.
Cal State is not quite as prestigious as SUNY (The UC system is different from the CSU system -- Univ of Calif v Cal Sat Univ system).
YOu sure they have a good German program?
That is one reason to change.
Fullerton is close to Albany in lifestyle, but the weather is warmer.
You WILL need a vehicle in California. Public trans sucks
Or you must live close to things.
Expect rents to be very high.
One of the reasons I left.
Houses cost $300K everywhere
Rents start at $750 a month everywhere.
Do realize that evey though it is near Disneyland it is on the border of LA County and you are in a METROPOLIS area that is WALL to WALL people, industry and buiness for 40 miiles below and 60 miles above and 20 miles left or right.
Albany is a "small town" comapred to LA/Anaheim.
The population of the 150 square mile metropolis is about 7 million people compared to barely 1 million for the Albany area.
There's lot to see and lots to do out there.
There are also gangs and serious gang violence. Do not travel great distances alone unil you learn the area and learn what clthoing not to wear.
Fulleton and Amaehime are pretty tame, but above you is El Monte La Habra.
You are on the start of the good area going south.
The expensive area, too. $400k and up for homes!
Goiong up to LA gets real bad.
But you are around some decent areas.
Don't know where you are from originally.
The area is better than most of Albany near Suny
But it's different. You'll quickly see.
You will probably become trilingual as Spanish is heavily spoken in the whole area.
I don't wnat to scare you off though. For me it's tame and for me Albany is a walk in the park.
I walked downtown LA and Hollywood at 3 am.
But people out here are afraid of downtown Troy.
LOs Angeles is a bit like Schenectady
Only worse
Anaheim is more like Clifton Park or Saratoga but with a lot more people
Your stuff should transfer easily.
Cal State Fullerton is more like Siena College. Even looks a tad like it.
On the good side, Disney land is 15 minutes away!
Some very good beachs (the southern ones, Newport, Laguana) are more than an hour away by car).
The Desert is close, 45 minutes away.
Like I said you are going into the better, southern/centrral and southern/beach area, but are right on the border line to LA which is like a baby NYC.
I came here to get away from the high cost of living, the gangs, the crime rate (1-2 people a day are killed in la by gunfire) and the Type A stress.
Get used to one story houses, no basements, no siding, flooded streets for weeks at a time and blistering heat in summer.
Apartments are all square box, white wall, beige carpet two and three floor multi units.
If you drive, get used to actually getting a ticket for going 40 in a 35 zone!
AND, Jaywalking is NOT a way of life. IT's a $100 ticket if you get seen by a cop.
ALso WALK and DOn"T WALK signs and TRAFFIC LIGHTS apply to Pedestrians as well as cars!
You walk against a DOn'T WALK light it's a $100 fine.

We plan to take the Glacier Express in July 2007. Can we get seats where we can open the windows? Question: We're taking this from St. Moritz to Zermatt.
We are getting the impression that all they have is the "Panoramic viewing" type cars with windows that can't be opened. But the literature talks about standard type cars available in trains from Chur to Zermatt that I believe have windows that can be opened.
1. Maybe we can take the "Panoramic Viewing" type cars from St. Moritz to Chur. And then change cars in Chur so we can be in a standard type car where the windows can be opened?
2. Maybe we should just call Glacier Express somehow and ask them? But it seems like such a hassle and I wanted to try this Yahoo Answers system to see what happens.
Thanks in advance.
Al
alanhause@yahoo.com
Albany, California
Answer:
there are two types of wagons
- Panorama viewing cars (1st and 2nd class) where you can't open the windows
- Conventional designed cars (1st and 2nd class) where it's possible to open the windows
http://www.glacierexpress.ch/timetableandprices/wagontyp es.php
check also "Timetable Summer 2007" for wagon types. there is only one train with conventional (standard) cars but obviously only with 1st class cars. (2nd class conventional cars seems no more be used).
enjoy this journey, it's the one where you will see the most of Switzerland in that short time.

New York To California Probation Transfer? Question: I posted this question before, but this time I wanna emphasize a bit more. My younger brother has been put on 5 years probation as of January 5, 2007, for a felony. My family is now in the process of moving to California and we cant leave him behind, he is 20 years old. My father is sick, and we need to move there in order to take care of him (financially).
I have a lot of family in California my older brother and my aunts. We put in a request for a transfer in November, Probation officer said it would take up to 6 months, the transfer came with a letter from my aunt, stating that he would live with her. My brother never signed the application and Albany claims they never received anything.
We just resubmitted the paperwork a month ago, this time with a notarized letter from my cousins job, stating that my brother will have employment with his business. This time my brother signed an application, other paper work, and did a drug test.
Can California deny him? Possible approval
He's been good with his probation and he is about to go from seeing a probation officer into a hand scan (according to his P.O.)
Can he get approved? What are the possibilities for a denial?
Answer:
Felony probation + more than 90 days of supervision left + brother and aunts in California (resident family) + employment lined up = mandatory transfer of supervision...
Translated: California is required to accept supervision...
I don't know why the PO told you it would take up to six months... California has 45 days to investigate and accept the transfer, once they receive it...

I want to buy used cellular phone (AT&T) with minimum costs.? Question: it does not matter how old the celluar phone is. As long as the brand is AT&T. I am in Albany (California).
Answer:
You don't need AT&T phone. My guess is that you have an old AT&T plan and you would like to keep it, but Cingular pressures you to switch from AT&T to Cingular, and they want to change your plan and sell you a new phone, am I correct. If that's the case here's what you need to do. Make sure that your AT&T phone is a GSM Phone (Must have a SIM Card.) If it does, go to http://www.nokiausa.com/phones/addtocart/1,1890,phonecode:6030|se rvice:0,00.html and purchase this phone. It's going to cost you about $100. When you get it, simply put your AT&T SIM Card in it and you can use it and keep your AT&T Plan. Or if you can find another unlocked GSM Phone elsewhere and cheaper buy it, just make sure that the phone has 1900Mhz and 850Mhz!!! It is very important to confirm that the phone is UNLOCKED and has these 2 frequencies! If your phone has no SIM CARD, then you are all out of luck. If you have the old TDMA(With NO SIM Card) AT&T phone, you won’t be able to activate it even if you find one. Good Luck!

a second turtle:]...? Question: Where can I get a second turtle? (i ot my last one somewhere not here) and Im wondering is there hatchlings that are for sale here, do you now how much they cost? average? I think Im going to get a RES. And also, where can you catch a turtle? if you can...
I live in albany, california. (around san francisco)
please help^^
Answer:
It's illegal to take wildlife from the wild in many places, so I advice against catching one. Also the wild ones germs will kill your captive one. You can try to find a private breeder for a second turtle, but you are going to want it around the same size as the turtle you already have. You WILL need to quarantine any new arrival for a minimum of 90 days to check for illness. Getting another turtle means you will need double the tank space. So if you have 2 females full grown that's a 200 gallon tank!

Is it about time this came out? Some Jehovah's Witnesses want more than to leave Watchtowers ? Question: Towns where Alleged Jehovah's Witness Child molesters have been reported to silentlambs
Home
Listed by each state
If you would to add a new listing contact silentlambs at info@silentlambs.org
The list below is designed to alert you to a possible danger in your community. Over the course of the last four years silentlambs has been a repository of reports on alleged Jehovah's Witness child molesters. Victims have reported extensively on times, dates and places abuse occurred. We have wrestled with how to alert the public as well as members that may be in congregations where abusers have been reported.
We offer the following suggestions if you as a Jehovah's Witness are in a town/congregation where a report has been made.
Do not allow your children to be alone with anyone in the congregation.
Escort your children to the bathroom during meetings and make sure no else is with them when using facilities.
Never allow your children to be alone in the car with anyone while in field service.
Do not allow any member to study with your child alone.
Avoid camping trips in which children go as a group with one or two adults.
Avoid baby sitters that are adult males.
At a get together watch your children and keep them in sight at all times.
Ask elders directly if they know of any abusers in your congregation, use specific names and note their reaction. They will not tell you directly but indirectly you can often figure out who it is. If one elder is less cooperative talk to another till you find out enough information to know the facts.
Check the local sex offender list in your area, type in the name of every person in your congregation to see if any are listed.
Notice any male member of the congregation that does not have privileges such as microphone or other duties around the congregation, especially if for a long period of time. They can offer talks on the TMS or sermons Service Meeting but are not allowed to conduct meetings. (This is only in case of a confessed child molester)
Note any member of the congregation that has children with sever rebellion or emotional problems.
Do not allow your children to have sleepovers with anyone.
Note members that the elders avoid having around their children.
If you are a member of the public and your community is on the list take the following steps to protect your family.
If Jehovah's Witnesses call at your home never allow them in your home
If you do not wish Jehovah's Witnesses to call at your home purchase a no trespassing sign and place it near your door. JW's are instructing to only respect "no trespassing" signs any other variation will be ignored.
If you do not wish Jehovah's Witnesses to call you can also call the local number and ask to be placed on the "do not call" list. They will note your home and check about once a year to make sure you wish to remain on the list.
If you choose to study with Jehovah's Witnesses do so at a neutral location such as the local Kingdom Hall or in a public place.
Never allow your child to be alone with members or their children.
If you choose to attend meetings with Jehovah's Witnesses then we suggest you follow the guidelines above for members.
Remember that most members are not aware of who the molesters are in their congregation according to church policy. They do not know.
If two Jehovah's Witnesses call at your door one could be a child molester. According to church guidelines all confessed child molesters are required to have a partner when going door to door. If two Jehovah's Witnesses appear at your door you might wish to ask if one or both are child molesters for peace of mind. Of course keep in mind if the person is an accused child molester they are allowed to work alone in the door to door work.
We hope this information is helpful and assists with the ultimate goal of silentlambs, protecting children. Check back as the list is updated on a regular basis.
