City DescriptionTyronza is a town in Poinsett County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 918 at the 2000 census. It is included in the Jonesboro, Arkansas Metropolitan Statistical Area.
Tyronza is located at 35°29′12″N 90°21′25″W / 35.48667, -90.35694 (35.486587, -90.356869).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 4.1 km² (1.6 mi²), all land.
Tyronza has acquired a reputation as a speed trap because of aggressive enforcement of speeding laws on Highway 63--the main route through Tyronza leading from Interstate 55 to Jonesboro--and because of the substantive portion of the town's budget deriving from speeding tickets. Indeed, the high volume of speeding tickets in Tyronza and neighboring Gilmore prompted the Arkansas state legislature to hold hearings into the behavior of the municipalities' police departments, which led to a new state speed trap law.
As the town expanded its borders in 2006, observers questioned whether this was a ploy to enable the town to increase its revenue from speeding tickets:
