City Description

Portia is a town in Lawrence County, Arkansas, United States. The population was 483 at the 2000 census. Portia is located at 36°5′7″N 91°4′6″W / 36.08528, -91.06833 (36.085273, -91.068430). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 3.3 km² (1.3 mi²), all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 483 people, 206 households, and 138 families residing in the town. The population density was 144.6/km² (373.8/mi²). There were 225 housing units at an average density of 67.3/km² (174.1/mi²). The racial makeup of the town was 97.10% White, 1.24% Black or African American, 1.45% Native American, and 0.21% from two or more races. 1.66% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 206 households out of which 25.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 55.3% were married couples living together, 11.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.0% were non-families. 31.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 21.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.88. In the town the population was spread out with 22.2%
