It is located in a river valley near the Arkansas River and in the Ozark Mountain region of Northwest Arkansas.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 4.8 square miles (12.4 km²), of which, 4.5 square miles (11.7 km²) of it is land and 0.3 square miles (0.7 km²) of it (5.43%) is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 3,707 people, 1,553 households, and 984 families residing in the city. The population density was 818.1 people per square mile (316.0/km²). There were 1,713 housing units at an average density of 378.1/sq mi (146.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 95.09% White, 2.00% Black or African American, 0.40% Native American, 0.11% Asian, 1.11% from other races, and 1.29% from two or more races. 2.16% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
