McGehee was founded as a rail-road town. The population of McGehee has been declining since the late 1960s. McGehee was the home town of horror novelist Nancy A. Collins.
McGehee is located at 33°37′32″N 91°23′40″W / 33.62556, -91.39444 (33.625426, -91.394330).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 6.4 square miles (16.6 km²), all of it land.
As of the census of 2000, there were 4,570 people, 1,836 households, and 1,259 families residing in the city. The population density was 711.7 people per square mile (274.8/km²). There were 2,044 housing units at an average density of 318.3/sq mi (122.9/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 56.72% White, 41.51% Black or African American, 0.57% Native American, 0.24% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 0.22% from other races, and 0.70% from two or more races. 1.49% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
