Hartman is located at 35°25′54″N 93°37′1″W / 35.43167, -93.61694 (35.431598, -93.617034).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.4 square miles (3.7 km²), of which, 1.4 square miles (3.7 km²) of it is land and 0.70% is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 596 people, 234 households, and 181 families residing in the city. The population density was 421.2 people per square mile (163.2/km²). There were 258 housing units at an average density of 182.3/sq mi (70.6/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 98.32% White, 1.01% Native American, 0.50% from other races, and 0.17% from two or more races. 1.68% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
There were 234 households out of which 30.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 62.4% were married couples living together, 10.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.6% were non-families. 21.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
