Anyone ever heard of Early 70's southern rock band Black Oak, Arkansas? Question: I live in Black Oak, Arkansas, hometown of lead singer of group. I'm only in 30's so know little about them. Husband is closer to 50, and said lead singer is 10 to 12 years older than him. I really only know one song, and it's played in few movies- one that comes to mind is "Road House". I can't say title because he says his stage name in song. 10 points to anyone that can tell me something about them-- example lead singers stage name- real name would be really awesome.
Answer:
All I can remember is "Jim Dandy To The Rescue" and "Get My Rocks Off".

What's your favorite Black Oak Arkansas song? Why?
Answer:
"Jim Dandy". It was so out of place with the time it was released. It sounded different than everything else. This was during a time when disco and extended album cuts were starting to become really popular and novelty songs like this one were becoming rare. Novelty songs were popular in the 1950s and 1960s but by the 1970s, they were not nearly as popular.

My husband heard a Canadian group called Painter in the 70s. They opened for Black Oak Arkansas. Any info?
Answer:
They were formed from the ashes of a 60s psych band called 'The 49th Parallel, also from Calgary.
Danny Lowe-Lead Guitar, Doran Beattie-Vocals, Wayne Morice-Bass & Vocals,
Barry Allen-Rhythm Guitar & Vocals, and Bob Ego-Drums.
Their music was heavy rock, in the style of BTO or April Wine, and played just as well.
Both Canadian and US pressings give no indication of where these guys hale from, and I'm pretty sure that's intentional. The album was recorded in Seattle Washington.
After it's release in '73, the band did the bar and club circuit, as well as opening for some pretty big names. A couple years later, Danny & Doran founded another Canadian hard rock group called 'Hammersmith', who took the same heavy rock formula and released a couple of LPs and achieved some moderate success.
Barry Allen, who was originally from Edmonton, had a bit of a solo career before 'Painter'. He was given a US recording contract by Capitol Records, and released several singles in the mid 60s. He then recorded a couple of albums, one of which was produced by, and featured the guitar work of Randy Bachman in 69/70. Bachman suggested he join the newly formed 'Painter'.
In 1982, Danny Lowe experienced what he called "an industrial accident" while placing 14 microphones in a sound studio. In playing back the recording made that day, he discovered he had inadvertently created an auditory illusion that he was surrounded by sound. The effect resembled how the human ear actually hears.
Over the next eight years, he and electro-technician John Lees worked together to fine-tune the system. In 1986, the pair formed a partnership with Larry Ryckman, a former Calgary real estate developer, and formed Archer Communications Inc.
QSound was patented in 1990, and the recording system was quickly embraced by music artists such as Sting, Madonna, INXS, Pink Floyd, Kate Bush, Paula Abdul, Julian Lennon, Wilson Phillips and Luther Vandross.
There's a quick history lesson on some good 'ol local boys!
I don't think the 'Painter' album is available on CD, at least it wasn't the last time I checked about a year ago.
Doran Beattie went on to have somewhat of a succesful country music career!

Black Oak Arkansas. Remember??? Question: Had a weird memory thing tonight.
#! 1st band I saw in concert.
#2 1 yr later was in another state ain a tiny town and saw them in a convienence store,(thinking they were locals)
#3 20 yrs later, married a guy whose only redeaming quality was that his close relative was the lead gutarist in the band.
#4 Now,maybe 35...40..yrs later my daughter remembers meeting him and only remembered that he was really nice and cute(which she really rememberted cause she is gay...and it was weird to her that she found a guy cute when she was 13). lol
I remember that mm17. BOA songs were"Jim Dandy to the Rescue" and "Hot and Nasty". Some truly great musical moments.lol! What can I say? I was 13???
Answer:
I remember them, but I can't remember what they sang. For some reason, I remember the Ozark Mountain Daredevils. I bought their first album and loved all the songs on it. It was an LP and has been trashed (stupidity on my part as vinyl is making a comeback...somewhat). Like myself, you've got to have some age on you.
Do you remember "Dead Skunk In the Middle of the Road"?

Black Oak Arkansas fans? Question: What are some of your favorite albums/songs?
I'm partial to the self titled debut's 'When Electricity Came to Kansas', 'Hot and Nasty', and Raunch 'N' Roll Live's version of 'Mutants of the Monster'. But then I love pratically everything they did up untill around 1976.
What are some of your favorite BOA moments?
Supawoopig - Yeah, 'If an Angel' is great too. 'Gravel Roads' really brings back memories for sure!
Fonzie T - Thanks for the link...seems I've stumbled on a load of videos now!
I always found them to be a little more rough around the edges than Lynyrd Skynyrd, and that Jim Dandy tune isn't very representative of their other material, even though it was a hit for them. These videos are great:
Hot and Nasty:

Os trich - Actually it's Tommy Aldridge. He later went on to play drums with Pat Travers, Whitesnake, an Ozzy to name a few. Tommy is currently bashing the skins with the reformed Thin Lizzy featuring John Sykes, Scott Gorham and Marco Mendoza.
Tommy's double bass kick really helped broaden BOA's sound...that's one of the reasons I enjoy the song 'Gravel Roads' so much.
Answer:
A few years ago on VH1, they showed reruns of (I think) "Don Kirshnir's Rock Concert" & I recorded a few & BOA was on one. "Jim Dandy"! (I'm sure it's on Youtube)
Funny, like, 2 weeks ago, I looked at their website & they're *Still* touring.
They seemed like a more light-hearted Skynyrd.
