City Description

Lukachukai (Navajo: Lókʼaaʼchʼégai) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Apache County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,565 at the 2000 census. Lukachukai, a Diné word translated as "Many White Reeds," is located at 36°25′7″N 109°14′11″W / 36.41861, -109.23639 (36.418478, -109.236487). According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 22.0 square miles (57.1 km²), all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,565 people, 423 households, and 326 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 71.0 people per square mile (27.4/km²). There were 634 housing units at an average density of 28.8/sq mi (11.1/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 98.21% Native American, 1.15% White, 0.06% Asian, 0.26% from other races, and 0.32% from two or more races. 0.96% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 423 households out of which 44.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.2% were married couples living together, 22.7% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.9% were non-families. 21.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.8% had someone living alone who was 65
