    Benson is a city in Cochise County, Arizona, in the United States, 45 miles east-southeast of Tucson. According to 2006 Census Bureau estimates, the population of the city is 4,934. The city was founded in 1880 when the Southern Pacific Railroad came through. It was named after Judge William B. Benson, a friend of the president of the railroad. The city is perhaps best known as the gateway to Kartchner Caverns State Park. Benson is located at 31°57′10″N 110°18′24″W / 31.95278°N 110.30667°W / 31.95278; -110.30667 (31.95288, -110.30677). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 35.7 square miles (92.5 km²), all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 4,711 people, 2,084 households, and 1,346 families residing in the city. The population density was 131.9 people per square mile (50.9/km²). There were 2,822 housing units at an average density of 79.0/sq mi (30.5/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 89.32% White, 19.85% Hispanic or Latino (of any race), 1.29% Native American, 0.72% Black or African American, 0.47% Asian, and 0.13% Pacific Islander. 5.69% were from other races, and 2.38% from two or more races.
