City Description

Chevak (Cev'aq in Central Yup'ik) is a city in Wade Hampton Census Area, Alaska, United States. At the 2000 census the population was 765. Chevak is located at 61°31′40″N 165°34′43″W / 61.52778°N 165.57861°W / 61.52778; -165.57861 (61.527673, -165.578702). According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.2 square miles (3.0 km²), of which, 1.1 square miles (3.0 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (1.71%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 765 people, 167 households, and 129 families residing in the city. The population density was 668.6 people per square mile (259.1/km²). There were 190 housing units at an average density of 166.1/sq mi (64.4/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 3.66% White, 90.46% Native American, 0.13% from other races, and 5.75% from two or more races. 0.65% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 167 households, out of which 64.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 41.3% were married couples living together, 20.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.2% were non-families. 19.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 0.6%
