James Lake Canoe and Cabin

Date & Time

Location

Anchorage, Alaska, United States

Address

, Anchorage, Alaska

Description

Have rented the Cabin at James Lake in Nancy Lakes State Recreation Area near Willow. Plan is to meet at Carr's Muldoon at 9:00 to carpool to canoe trailhead approximately 1.5 hours north of Anchorage. We can rent canoe to have waiting at trailhead and from there the adventure begins-a 4hr paddle with several portages to cabin. Total cost of cabin and canoe rental will be $27.10 if we have six people...would be really nice to have an even six to make portages easier. Please only RSVP "yes" if you are serious about coming. This is an exploratory for me, as I've never done this but I've heard the lake is very peaceful and secluded. Fishing is a possibility for pike I believe but if you are a fisherman I'm sure you'll research the rules and be prepared. Bring: sleeping bag, mat, non-cotton layers, food, cookstove, camera, bear and bug dope. I will bring a camp-type water filter and a box of red wine. We need to carry whatever we bring so be economical but comfortable! Dogs not Okay since we'll be travelling by water Questions:Maureen 306-8973

Portage Lake kayaking/ hike to Portage Pass/ possible climb of Bard Pk

Date & Time

2010-07-31 08:00:00

Location

Anchorage, Alaska, United States

Address

, Anchorage, Alaska

Description

WHAT: Portage Lake kayaking/ hike to Portage Pass/ possible climb of Bard Pk If the weather is good we will paddle across Portage Lake. If weather is bad I have 2 alternative places to paddle that will not be subject to Portage Pass winds. Once across the lake let's hike to Portage Pass. Clear weather makes for breathtaking views. Some few, ambitious paddlers/ hikers may try to climb Bard Peak, that hogback sliver that rises to the right of Portage Pass. Bard Pk is 3800' and about 2.4 miles from the pass. MAP WHEN/WHERE: 8 AM meet at Carrs Huffman. Plan to be out all day; earlier if you only want to paddle across the lake and not hike or climb (Bard Pk. is an exploratory for me; if it becomes a climb that needs a rope, we will turn back). BRING: -- Sea/ touring kayak with a spray skirt and waterproof hatches; single or double kayaks OK. -- SPRAY SKIRT and PFD are REQUIRED to be worn on ALL ADVENTURERS paddle trips on ALL KAYAKS -- Clothing for the weather that you see and the weather it can become - hot/cold/ wind/ rain -- Trekking/ ski poles if you are hiking (optional but recommended. Hiking is up a creek with lose boulders and other irregular terrain) -- Ice axe & helmet (These only for Bard Pk. ascenders. Both are REQUIRED - no helmet/ no axe please do not even consider going to Bard Pk) -- Ice grippers (REQUIRED for Bard Pk. ascenders) -- Water/ hot beverage in a thermos/ snacks/lunch -- Dry bag with spare clothes; small backpack to carry items on the hike DETAILS: -- Portage, like any large glacial lake, can get very windy and choppy with very little notice. Paddlers must adhere to group decisions if you choose to go along on this outing. We cannot have kayak cowboys deciding that they can handle paddling conditions that the group decides not to paddle in. -- If you are going to hike to the pass, plan to use the same footwear as you used in your boat. Lots of loose rock, grit and sticks suggest closed-toe footwear. I suggest rubber boots. -- Those in the sub-group going to Bard Pk, plan to wear footwear that can handle both snow and rocky slopes. I do not know what we may encounter. I suggest gaiters to keep small rocks out of your shoes. -- If the lake is too windy for paddling we can paddle on either of a couple of pond areas I have been wanting to explore within a few miles of Portage Lake. -- Participants must be at least 12 years old. Any paddler less than 16 should be in a double kayak with a parent or designated adult. CARPOOL: Within the limitations of available roof rack space. Plan to compensate your driver for gas; especially if someone else is transporting your kayak. KAYAK RENTAL: Check early to rent from- REI AK Kayak Academy (Jim Gonski) Alan Colter (Adventurers member who may have a few rental kayaks available at good rates) DOGS: No, please. We need to have all kayak hatches closed and spray skirts fastened so I do not know where Fido would ride. COST: No cost for parking and no permit necessary. CONTACT: Doug Van Etten 244-6610

Location

Anchorage, Alaska, United States

Address

, Anchorage, Alaska

Description

Update: Kristie Lent has graciously agreed to step in and act as host for this meetup. Kristie will act as your POC for this event. Russian River Falls Photo Hike July 31, 2010 Time: 10:00 a.m. Meeting Location: Carrs Huffman (outside the Coffee Shop) Photo Hike Destination: Russian River Falls (Russian River Lakes Trail) Length 4.6 miles round trip Elevation Gain: ~500 feet Rating Easy Parking Fee - $11 Contact: Kristie Lent Situated on Alaskas Kenai Peninsula, the Russian River Lakes trail is in one of Alaskas most prized fishing spots. Situated in a lush green forest and dramatic scenery at the end of this hike sits a fish ladder to assist salmon returning to their spawning grounds. Often times bears are spotted during the fishing run. Our location for this photo hike will be to the accompanying falls and fish ladder. Maintained by the USDS Forest Service the Russian River Lakes trail is a level foot path, gradual grades, and generally well maintained. It can also get busy at certain times of the year. These photographic hikes will be set at a leisurely pace so we can take photos at our own pace. If you are looking for a fast paced cardio driven climb, this is not the hike for you. We will meet at the Carrs Huffman location outside the entrance of the Coffee shop at 10:00 a.m. and then will group up and carpool down to the Russian River parking lot. If you are planning at meeting us at the Russian River Parking Lot we should arrive at approximately 11:30-11:45. window and will meet you at the trailhead. Directions to the trailhead: North end of trail can be accessed at Mile 52 of the Sterling Highway. Turn onto the Russian River Campground Road, trailhead parking is 1 mile further. East end access is at Mile 48 of the Sterling Highway. Turn into Snug Harbor Road, travel 9 miles to Cooper Lake Road, 3 miles to parking. Please make sure you bring enough water and dress in layers. In the coming weeks we will add numerous other photo hikes including Reed Lake and South Fork of Eagle River. We hope to see you there!

Lughnassah Ritual, Picnic, & games

Date & Time

Description

Come join us as we celebrate the beginning of the Harvest season. We have a picnic shelter at Mirror Lake Park for the entire day and everyone is welcome to come eat food, play games and get to know one another. Food will be a potluck picnic. Bring whatever you feel like making and want to share with the group (anything actually harvested locally would be awesome). I'll be bringing plates, cups, silverware and napkins so no one has to worry about those. We'll have a few games for both kids and adults and any other games or toys anyone wants to bring will be very welcome. The lake is swimming friendly so bring your suits. I also have high hopes that a drum circle with spontaneously appear so bring your instruments. The (informal) Harvest Ritual will start at 6pm. This will be a very informal ritual in which every attendee is encouraged (though not required) to participate. After a couple chants, each person in the circle will be given the opportunity to offer words of thanks to whatever deity/force/spirit they wish to acknowledge (please limit your words to 2 minutes) and if you have a small offering, there will be a fire to place it in. After the Ritual, anyone who wants to hang out is welcome to gather around the fire, chat, play drums, tell stories, and maybe sing a few songs. The celebration will end when everyone decides to go home or when the park closes at 11pm whichever comes first. Google Map of the Park
