City Description

Sipsey is a town in Walker County, Alabama, United States. At the 2000 census the population was 552. Sipsey is located at 33°49′23″N 87°5′10″W / 33.82306, -87.08611 (33.823108, -87.086127). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 0.5 square miles (1.3 km²), all of it land. As of the census of 2000, there were 552 people, 212 households, and 149 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,124.5 people per square mile (435.0/km²). There were 239 housing units at an average density of 486.9/sq mi (188.3/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 68.12% White, 31.34% Black or African American, 0.18% Native American, 0.18% from other races, and 0.18% from two or more races. 0.18% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 212 households out of which 33.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.5% were married couples living together, 16.0% had a female householder with no husband present, and 29.7% were non-families. 27.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
