Margaret is located at 33°40′33″N 86°28′4″W / 33.67583, -86.46778 (33.675957, -86.467641).
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 9.3 square miles (24.1 km²), of which, 9.3 square miles (24.1 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (0.21%) is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 1,169 people, 401 households, and 326 families residing in the town. The population density was 125.8 people per square mile (48.6/km²). There were 457 housing units at an average density of 49.2/sq mi (19.0/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 65.18% White, 32.59% Black or African American, 0.34% Asian, 0.09% from other races, and 1.80% from two or more races.
There were 401 households out of which 41.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 60.8% were married couples living together, 16.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 18.7% were non-families. 16.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older.
