City Description

Lockhart is a town in Covington County, Alabama, United States. At the 2000 census the population was 548. Lockhart is located at 31°0′41″N 86°21′2″W / 31.01139, -86.35056 (31.011435, -86.350652). According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 1.1 square miles (2.9 km²), of which, 1.1 square miles (2.8 km²) of it is land and 0.04 square miles (0.1 km²) of it (3.54%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 548 people, 229 households, and 147 families residing in the town. The population density was 504.1 people per square mile (194.1/km²). There were 264 housing units at an average density of 242.9/sq mi (93.5/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 74.82% White, 23.91% Black or African American, 0.36% Native American, 0.36% Pacific Islander, and 0.55% from two or more races. 2.19% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race. There were 229 households out of which 30.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 48.5% were married couples living together, 11.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 35.4% were non-families. 33.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.7% had someone living alone who was 65
